Our poor farm dog Mimosa has been poisoned by toxic Pine Processionary caterpillars! We had to rush her off to the vets for emergency treatment! Pine Processionary Caterpillars are spreading throughout Europe and are covered in toxic hairs which can kill cats and dogs. The venom in the hairs causes anaphylaxis and necrosis so the pet can suffocate or even lose parts of its mouth! They are a very serious problem in Portugal. In this video we document our experience, talk about what signs and symptoms to look out for and how to treat it.
We are Ken & Gina, and we left the UK in 2019 in search of a simpler life, away from our office jobs, and the hustle and bustle of the big city. We sold our house, left the UK, and left the Rat race behind us, to move to Portugal and buy a farm. We found an amazing farm in Castelo Branco, Central Portugal where we have lived for the last two and a half years. We make these videos for our friends and family to keep up with what’s going on in our new lives and as a record to look back on one day so see how far we have come. We are always amazed when we see how many people have been watching, following, and subscribing to our vlogs. Thanks for tuning in 😊

Poor Mimosa
Vetbeirao are amazing. They are all very nice there, and gentle with our pets.
Hang birdhouses in the pineforest to atract more birds. They eat alot of catepillers. As natural pestcontrol.
Glad your mimo is on the mend ….
Good recovery for your dog.
I'm glade mimosa be OK. Stay strong
Happy that Mimosa is recovering, We are dog lovers and can relate to your anxiety. We worry here (California) about our dogs biting poison toads or being bit by rattlesnakes instead of biting poison caterpillars here. How do your chickens and ducks interact with the caterpillars? Do they know instinctively to avoid them, or are they immune and gobble them up?
Glad Mimo is okay and all is well. Thank you for sharing good and valuable info.
Oh poor Mimo, that is a really scary incident. Is there anything that you can do about the caterpillars?
Thanks for your very informative video. We have these caterpillars on our Greek Island and have seen them in the pine trees. Keep the videos coming
So glad she is better! You did exactly the right things! I keep antihistamines for my animals! I had never heard of this danger we have those caterpillars here in Virginia too but I did not know the danger! I love how you care for the animals! One of the other YouTub channels I watch adopted an elderly dog! They were at the vet when the elderly owner came in to have the dog euthanized! The vet said she didn’t want to do it so they asked if they could have him! He is doing great!
What a nightmare. You seem to have found a really terrific vet! And of course you know your animals well. So good to hear that shes better today.
Thankfully Mimo is doing well!!
I was wondering here we have the tick peel the dogs take all spring / summer ! Don’t they have something like that there ?
So glad Minosa she ok, and feeling much better. Take care.
Fabulous ending to a very dangerous event, happy days I'll add as others have said great vets we should stay quiet on the price or they'll get a heads up.
So glad that you got Mimo in to see the veterinarian and that she is doing better 🙂
Very good price. California vet bills are thru the roof. That would be over 500.00 dollars for sure. Good catch.i am a vet nurse.
So glad to see Mimo made a full recovery.
Sara and Luke cut down some pine trees and burned the nests. Was surprised that Theo bought some pine saplings and wondered why he would plant this tree that is the only tree the caterpillars like. Maybe you should tell him not to plant them. Also, can't think of his name, but the man who helps Cindy with building has added traps on his pine trees that collects the worms as they descend the tree. We had a problem in the Eastern US several years ago with another kind of caterpillar, can't remember the name of those, but what people did was put a line of tar around the tree trunk and the caterpillars got stuck to it as they climbed down so that they could not get to the ground and turn into moths. I was in tears your whole episode. I've become very found of vloggers pets and love seeing them. You take good care of your pets. Hopefully your fast action allows Mio to have a full life. Jane , Philadelphia
Cetrizine is called Zyrtec here in the USA.
So sorry about your dog!
Are you using the Black Coal Tit birdhouses? They will greatly reduce the Processionary Caterpillars.
Those caterpillars are a nightmare. Poor Mimosa….🌀💚🌀
So glad Mimo is OK. We have a new German Sheepdog puppy. No pine trees on our land, but our neighbour has some that are full of Processionary nests. Great advice on treatment, I will need to look for some Cetix, just in case. We have a great vet about 15 minutes away.
So happy she’s ok. Can’t believe the price of vets! I took my cat the other day with a mouth problem, she had blisters on her tongue. Cost me £295.00! Thank goodness for insurance.
So glad she’s ok. Thank you for sharing this, the caterpillars have been a huge worry for me since we moved to Portugal with our dogs & cats.
So glad all turned out fine.💕🌺
So happy that Mimo is now recovering. Our dog Cooper also suffered from the caterpillars when he was a puppy, he now has part of his tongue missing. Only the other week my husband dried himself after a shower with a towel that had been on the line drying. Within seconds he was covered in hives. We found just one Caterpillar on the bathroom floor. Be very careful these caterpillars are terrible
Happy r Mimmo, happy for you two, too. It means a lot to have a good vet. Beautiful shots at the end of the vid.
Take care and see you next time.
Sooo glad mimo is recovering well. Wow the vet bill sooo cheap comparison to UK 🇬🇧

What a great vet that Lilalia is! You are indeed blessed to have her.
Oh gosh how traumatic! Poor Mimo, so smart of you all knowing what to do and reacting fast in this situation! Get better Mimo, we love you!❤
Lucky that she's OK.
