First Week On The Farm | My Central Portugal Farm #29

Myself and the dogs officially move out of the Airbnb safety net and onto our semi-off-grid farm. Lots to do, but we work through the first week little by little tackling a little bit of everything and just getting used to the space and environment.

The heatwave was relentless and the structure felt like being in a sauna. By the end of the week I caved and booked us into an Airbnb for 2 nights to ride out the two last days of near 40 degree Celcius heat. We desperately needed break. I had a heat-rash and I’m sure we all had heatstroke too.

Best Airbnb stay to date! Book it here if you want great comfort and space:

Enjoying the journey? Consider buying me a cup of coffee or a roof tile to help save up for the new roof 🙂

About Girl Meets Farm:
I’m Christine. I started this journey in search of my forever farm in Portugal, and now I have found it!

This is my adventure as a solo expat on a farm in Central Portugal with my two fur-kids, Shakti & Shiva.
I’ve never owned or lived on a farm, but moved to Portugal in the hope of fulfilling a life-long dream of finding open space, subsistence farming and a safer, better life.

Now that we have found our farm, the second stage of our journey begins!
I have to figure out farm life while renovating an agricultural structure to make it habitable and turn it into a comfortable home for me and my furkids.

Thank you for joining our journey!

  1. Good for you, doing what you want to do. What a journey you are living (and your lovely dogs). What I find refreshing, is that your being your self and not playing the 'poor me' card, like some do on YouTube. We are also planning to make the move to Portugal, some time soon/one day (hopefully). All the best to you and your children/dogs (👍to you vlogs/videos) 😎

  2. Well done 👍 I’m literally just installing my shower, and found out I need an extra part to make it run properly- just another little wait before it comes then I should be able to complete it 🙂

  3. Amazing and resourceful lady ❤️ … Can't wait to see all your adventures in Portugal. Btw, that gas bottle is pretty safe so don't worry to much about it, and your shower improvisation looked amazing 🤣 …. Noone sane will laugh at your DIY work, so do your best and don't worry about naggers

  5. Hola!! Found you about 4 videos ago. It makes my heart smile to see your persistence and determination. This is how dreams are achieved. I celebrated the unexpected "shower head" I love diy myself (don't know much, but always determined to figure things out). Wishing I was already there and could offer my help. Until then, I'll be cheering you from here. All the best to you! With Love from Texas.

  6. Hi Christine
Awesome to follow your progress.. very refreshing shower,, translate to bloody cold 🙂
Yarh 38C is not for white people,, :-/ without insulation under your roof,, it must be like an owen. You need to insulate some part of the house to have a "cold" places to retreat to,, is wondering if a watering system to keep your roof wet,, would not help keeping the temp down inside.
Water evaporating needs energy to go from the water state to the vapor state,, so it cools down surrounding stuff. why we feel colder,, wet in the sun. 🙂

  7. Hi Christine, don't doubt yourself. You have achieved a lot. Coffee first, food them shower. Love the pipe method. It made me smile. In the evenings you can sort out your storage of your personal belongings. Start with shelving….keeps things off the ground and you can see where things are. Building a brick base later for the toilet is more practual. U-tube has some good tutorials.
A ceiling fan is a must….air movement keeps you cool. And adjusting to the heat your body will get used too. Here it's 42, my fans are great. Your achieving so much, things will falling place. Like most things in life it takes time, find other like minded people and reach out.stay safe. Love your honest videos.

  8. It might be a good idea to round the corners off on the plywood. It will make the toilet more comfortable and you won’t have to worry about walking into sharp corners in the dark.

  9. Yes, a hose nozzle would work great for a temporary shower nozzle. You might look into getting a portable air conditioner unit on wheels or maybe a swamp cooler if it’s not too humid. Good luck, you have a lot of work to get done before you can be comfortable in your space.
