I don’t know about you but when I’m in a country I’ve not been to before and I go to a café, take a taxi, or have a meal in a restaurant, the experience is always spoiled a little bit by a niggling worry in the back of my mind about how much I will be expected to give as a tip. So, let me put your mind at rest as far as concerns Portugal.
There is no tipping culture here. Even in a high class restaurant it is not expected – waiters are paid proper wages – but you could leave two or three Euros to show appreciation if you are very happy with the service. In bars and cafes locals tend to pay with the exact money; maybe they will round it up to the next Euro, or simply leave some small coins behind.
The same goes for taxis. So it’s a good idea to have a reasonable selection of notes and coins on you. Or, if you’re feeling generous, you could always say: ”Keep the change”, but no one will be offended if you don’t.
Now you can just chill out and enjoy the wonderful Portuguese cuisine and hospitality with no worries.
