Here Are My Biggest Culture Shocks After Moving To Portugal

I’ve been in Lisbon for about 1 1/2 years now, and I’m excited to share a few of the culture shocks that I’ve experienced while here. Not all of these are “shocking” but just some interesting observations that I’ve made over the time that I’ve been here.

Here is the winery/wine that I shared:

  1. Hi everyone – So, I guess Top Sheets ARE used here. 🤔 I'm still not sure. Some of you are saying they are, and some are saying they aren't. Could this be the great top sheet debate of 2022? Haha, no just kidding, but thank you for educating me on RETURNS. GAHHHHH! I didn't know…this is interesting for me. Thanks all…keep the comments coming!

  2. Oh I'm so happy to have come across your videos. My partner and I have been speaking on visiting there for two years now, and hoping to do so by 2023. I am curious if you speak Portuguese? I do not, but my partner does speak a good bit of spanish (tho I know it's not quite the same). Just curious if you do, and if not, are there many people who speak English there?

  3. Beautiful presentation, Prachel. It's funny when living in the U.S. (as I do), that you come to think that stress is just normal; the "human condition." It isn't. It's sick. Thank God for places like Portugal and for its wonderful people. Many thanks to you and every good wish.

  4. Regarding returning items, of course you can return items but we usually only do it if it's malfunctioning. I guess it's more common to do a swap than a return, specially if it's a gift like clothes or a decorative item we don't really like. You always need the receipt to be able to exchange it and if the item is clothing it needs to have the tag on it. If anyone gives you headaches for trying to return a malfunctioning item just ask for the "livro de reclamações" at the store and write a formal complaint there, it's against the law to refuse exchanging or returning the money for something that doesn't work. You are supposed to keep a copy of that complaint btw, the store should give it to you once you finish writing it. Wishing you all the best!

  5. Yes, lots of good Indian restaurants in Portugal. There is a region in India called Goa which was colonised by the Portuguese. I only know because I had a friend from Goa who was Catholic and had a Portuguese last name, but was ethnically Indian. She shared this part of her culture with me and now I am planning to end up in Portugal (eventually). We don’t meet people by accident!

  6. Watched and enjoyed the video very much. Glad to hear that your experience has been rewarding and fulfilling.
To the bedsheet question, my first experience without the top sheet was at a Mövenpick in Beijing. I didn't take to it.
May you continue to produce inspirational videos. Stay safe 🙏

  7. Hi Prachel, consider if you are taking in more of a particular food that triggers your allergy. Maybe the extra wine? I say this because for a long time I gave up many milk (not yogurt) products and recently I increased milk/cheese a lot. While it does not directly trigger the allergy, I am more sensitive to pollen and my disposable mask when I go out after drinking milk, so that my nose runs and runs and runs, and when I stop the milk, the pollen allergies significantly decrease to a minor sniffle now and then.

  8. I laughed hysterically when you spoke about returning items. 🤣😂. Returning stuff is an American past time because we are soooo consumerist in nature. We buy when bored, happy, angry, sad, lonely, hungry, full, whatever. We buy buy buy because we know we can return return return. If we go to a store to return something and are met with resistance we throw massive fits and start yelling about "customer service" and the shops just give in. In other countries returning purchases is not a common practice because people move at a slower pace so they have time to actually consider what they are doing. Lastly, in a lot of countries the idea of returning certain things (depending on the item) is considered very poor taste whereas in America we will return items that have even been used (as you mention).

  9. Aww, afraid of the Lisbon ghosts! 😜 I still haven’t been yet, but I love the diversity I see in everyone’s videos. It seems the Portuguese, have mostly embraced all of the cultures they once exploited in the past. Also, Portuguese people are always up in the comments with the intent to educate, and not to put people down. I’ve learned so much from certain people in the comments. I’ve also become internet friends with a few. That’s never happened with any of the other countries I’ve researched. I have a really good feeling about Portugal.

  10. What? Someone is pulling your leg about no top sheet. And yes returns are frowned upon…exchanges are allowed sometimes but rarely do you get your money back. Great video, thx for sharing

  11. Hi Love, Boa Tarde!
Funny thing about the top sheets. My big thing was not being able to buy face-clothes anywhere. Nowhere! I bought some cotton hand towels and cut them down to size. This is a good reminder to buy some top sheets before my move. The bottom sheets I can buy there, to fit the mattress properly.
I remember buying a flat iron, from Lidl (in Peniche) and I didn't have any trouble returning it when it didn't work well. That's my only experience returning things. Most places take returns in Canada too… I would think any store would be willing to replace something purchased that is faulty.
You are soooo right about the live and let live. I was alone most of the time. The only time I was bothered, was a British guy (old man) who followed me around Sagres in his motorhome. He kept popping up and tried to tell me I was his future wife. Blech!
Furniture Capital of Europe…? Is it Paços de Ferreira, just north-east of Porto?
    Beautiful video Amiga x

  12. NO TOP SHEETS?? Sorry, what? I've lived in Portugal most of my life and I never – ever – saw a single bed without a bottom (fiited or not) AND a top sheet. Every single bed set comes with both sheets and one or two pillow cases…
