House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was in Rome over the weekend for a climate conference, but it’s her meeting with Pope Francis that’s generating a lot of talk. Because Speaker Pelosi is known for her out spoken support of abortion, many Catholics are expressing their dismay. The Pope often meets with heads of state and prominent politicians regardless of their views. Speaker Pelosi issued a statement about her visit, saying in part, “His Holiness’ leadership is a source of joy and hope for Catholics and for all people, challenging each of us to be good stewards of God’s creation…” During the trip, the speaker attended Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, the American parish in Rome, but things did not go as planned due to a security issue. Pelosi and her husband left before she could do the second reading. Capitol Hill Correspondent, Erik Rosales reports.
