How does a country join NATO?

This animation shows the steps it takes for a candidate country to become a full member of NATO, recognised both nationally and internationally.

Built into the very text of NATO’s founding treaty, it has always been possible for new members to join the Alliance with the unanimous agreement of all existing Allies.

The Membership Action Plan (MAP) was created to streamline the process and help countries aspiring to join NATO in their preparations for potential membership.

Now, with the most recent addition of North Macedonia, NATO has grown from an original group of 12 to 30 member states.

  1. What happens if Russia retailiates on us when starting the "Aspiration to join/MAP" process? Im so afraid here in Sweden that Russia will retaliate on us if we start to join NATO. What I have understand, is that if we start the NATO process, and Russia retaliates before the actual formal application is made, the country will be considered in-conflict, and the further application process will fail, meaning that there will be no NATO membership, but instead we will have a really really angry Russia on us.

  2. Russia is being done a cruel and bloody war in Ukraine. Russia is droping bombs on houses, thousands of people died, children died! Please, I beg you, help close the sky over Ukraine. Open sky is a new bombs, destruction of houses, death of thousands of civilians. Please, help! Close the sky over Ukraine, don't close your eyes on death!

  3. By agreeing to the values of the alliance of NATO, a country does not lose it's independence.
It is not a forfeit for a country to join a united treaty and become a NATO member, it's a unity of peace.

  4. I have many questions as to which aspect of Ukraine; other than votes by current members of NATO, are not part of NATO? I've been searching online for the reasons as to why and am not finding clear answers. By this I am seeing that the current members don't think of anything good Ukraine can do for NATO. Yet, NATO countries can some how supply Ukraine with weapons, so they can defend themselves.

  5. So I’m confused so u have to be a European country to be apart of NATO so Ukraine can’t join they aren’t considered being apart of Europe I’m guessing this can be override by all members of NATO agreeing
