How Johnny Harris Rewrites History

As a historian watching the latest Johnny Harris video I was disturbed. Johnny has a laudable goal of wanting to show the origins of European colonialism. But he cuts so many corners, that history is sacrificed on the altar of storytelling. In doing so he presents warped version of what actually happened.

The video in question:

00:00 – 00:30 – Johnny Harris Lies To You
00:30 – 01:18 – Johnny’s Vid
01:18 – 04:32 – Europe as a dark dark place
04:32 – 05:10 – Portugal’s Expansion
05:10 – 10:28 – Columbus Didn’t Invent Colonialism
10:28 – 11:37 – A Note on Depicting Native peoples
11:37 – 13:07 – A Compliment For Johnny Harris
13:07 – 15:59 – The Limits of Storytelling
15:59 – 16:24 – Acknowledgements

  1. Great video. I really appreciate the way you approached this and appreciate the amount of work that went into creating this discourse. I'll just say it right away: I accept your points here, and to be candid, the response to this video was a pretty big wake up call for me. The research on this was overly biased towards a simplistic narrative to which most of the facts bent. My hope with this series was to give an highly simplified almost “story book” version of a vastly complicated 500-year history so that those who are not usually interested in history could access the broad arc of European imperialism. I still believe in that goal but missed the mark with this one. So thank you for the compelling dissent.
I’ll do some soul searching on how I’ll address this in the channel and series itself. Again. I appreciate the way you approached this critique. Also REALLY great job on the production. new sub here.

Oh the Irving analogy at the end was pretty 🔥

  2. I usually like Johnnys videos, but this one I turned off after a few minutes. I’m fairly well read on European history and I could tell he was going in extremely biased and low on information. I’m ok with tackling the sins of imperialism, but you’ve got to do it accurately

  3. My fav is the bread video where he says that bacteria rather than yeast raises bread, no time for googling ‘how is bread made’ but plenty of money to go to Paris to eat a bagette.

  4. Yaaaa christopher columbus is just a fucking idiot, not to mention a mass murderer, And about the spanish colonization in pilipinas search for battle of mactan that the time where ferdinand magellan died. And yaaaaa that guy is dumb changing history is just disinformation

  5. I view John channel more likely to be a media business rather educational, he's senior journalist of Vox which is branch of gigantic media corporate, whose revenue come from viewership and brand partnership so that way shaping John mindset to be more Media Entrepreneurs, considering him running an online academy startup, than Geopolitical Educator. Not to weigh the level of John video accuracy or objectivity, but the production quality generally in terms of production Studio, I'm on the John side for his lack of resources, especially sizable funding and limited team members, but expect to see further improvement if everything going well with his channels in the future

  6. This is like a YouTube peer review. I can see this having positive effects for the reliability of the platform, especially when it’s responded to with such professionalism as it has been.

  7. The way these videos are titled makes them come across as a little jealous sounding. So many of these take-down vids by small channels make it sound like Johnny is purposely trying to mislead people according to some nefarious plot instead of "Johnny fucked up details and should consult a historian" it's a little… overly cynical for my taste.n

  8. I normally honestly enjoy Johnny's videos quite a lot. This last one though was quite painful and disappointing to watch. I was expecting better than a distorted/biased narrative, but after all I'm European and it seems to me like Americans started having some weird crazy ideas about history lately that it didn't come to me so much as a shock

  9. All conquering empires/civilizations from the old days are bad by modern standards. And all empires/civilizations from the past were the same. They only cared about themselves, and wanted to take what others had for themselves. That was EVERYONE!!! African, Middle Eastern, Asian, European, it was all the same, everyone was alike. Just because Europeans where the most successful at this "human template", it doesn't mean that Europeans are bad people, nor does it mean that their ancestors were bad people. I just means that fate/luck/god/what-ever favored them.

Jus to make is clear… Native American tribes would commit GENOSIDE against each other! They would kill off all males, and females not capable of reproduction from other tribes. And they would kill each other in the most brutal ways. The Europeans were just "another tribe of humans". No different than any other foreign tribe, except that they had no chance of defeating them.

That is just the way history was back then… and may be again in the future! Where only the strong survive!!!

  10. This is a fantastic video, and thanks Johnny for your response. I do believe videos can entertain and be academically watertight. Citing is crucial as is sticking to the facts. Presenting them entertainingly is the challenge of the educational communicator. Really civil from both sides here. Gives me hope haha

  11. dude i agree! Ive seen many videos about topics i am familiar with, and it id so annoying! like these buzzfeed/ vox “journalists” cant keep getting away with it!

  12. Understanding what happened in the Renaissance, the two waves of imperialism, and the Enlightenment necessitates an accurate understanding of medieval Europe. Unfortunately, the popular knowledge thereof — especially in the United States — is colored much more by narratives having sprung up from the inaccurate historical writings of the philosophes and of pseudohistorians like Washington Irving than those by current research.

It's hard to combat this misinformation because of the prevailing presentist bias tinged with pride of the present, "progressive" age, that — in order for its features to stand out like how figures in a bas relief do — there must be a depressing, backwards age that precedes it. You can call it a foil if you like. That pride to be sustainable, needs a foil, and that's the Middle Ages. What worsens the problems are those rabid nationalists who derive their myths from a very distorted understanding of the Middle Ages and claim the era for themselves. Then you have very noisy apologists who think they are Rudyard Kipling or Robert Cecil and therefore claim everything that effs up in this world as their fault because they do think they're guilty.

The modern age, at least in Europe, was not a paradise either. The postmodern age neither is. The 20th century was uniquely bloody and this current century is not good either. Some of the leading minds of Europe defended colonialism and planted the seeds of militant nationalism that will culminate in the two world wars. The Industrial Revolution widened the class divide so much that it threatened to asunder the unities of the countries in Europe.

I'm grateful for your response. People badly need to be informed.

I just subbed to your channel.

  13. Brilliant video! I've always prefered in depth analysis over pretty maps- OK I'm bias, but it's nice to hear someone fact checking and going into more detail. Youtube is plagued by high quality visuals, low quality content.

  14. Bro if he wasn’t right why all i see in german supermarkets come either from asia south america or africa? Europeans were looting and still loot resources from us . Touchy feely european

  15. My degree is also in History.
I have worked as a Historian.
It is so so easy for people like him to "rewrite" history to fit their needs or to appeal to certain audiences.
    That's not history.

  16. Johnny seem to demonize European history as if the world in general isn't as bad. All humans and other species have this "chaotic" nature in order to survive if we are weighing this in today's moral standards. That's the basic concept of life.

  17. I really liked this video! Thank you for making the points that you did! I'd also like to add that there are many other things which Johnny neglected to mention which I think are very important for people to know. One is that it was not just governments that were exploring and whatnot; private companies and religious groups were doing this as well. Portuguese Jesuits, for example, took over various parts of East Asia and became rich through trade and sometimes plundering. Then there's the Dutch East India Trade Co and the British East India Trade Co. as further examples.

  18. Goed gedaan man!

  19. Honestly, I don't know where to begin. This video oversimplifies a complex topic while ridiculing a video for doing the same thing. The "Portuguese model" presented here can be traced back to the Phoenicians. The "Spanish model" can be traced back to the Greeks. Both of which were founded undoubtably on earlier models which are obscured by the collapse of the Bronze Age. Colonization is a Human "thing" not uniquely associated with Western Civilization. The Chinese colonized, the ancient Egyptians colonized, the Yoruba colonized, the Inca colonized, the Turks colonized (quite successfully). There are too many instances of colonization to list. Colonization is intrinsic to Human nature; it is not relegated to a corner of history or people from certain regions.

  20. Great friendly critque of johnny harris' video. Was wondering if you happen to know Kraut's channel, he posts long form essays about geopolitics and history. They are all quite balanced and nuanced. Would be great if you can make a critque of his work!

  21. Will it surprise anyone if he has Govt Agencies behind the scene, especially writing the scripts for him?
Does Anyone believe he knows or researched these by himself?

Is it more Likely he is just another Govt talking peice, pushing Govt Propganda, even Lies?

  22. J.B. Nice video, however you have bought the official history version. And though both you and Johnny Harris are wrong, he is less wrong than you are. Do some real research into history, my friend!
