Washing your clothes while you travel is essential to be able to pack as little as possible and not smell like you fell into a pigsty. Here Jocelyn gives a brief lesson on how to use a washing machine in Europe for Americans who are not used to the European style washing machines.
Please Note: US Washers tend to be significantly larger than their European counterparts.

  1. For Those Wondering Why We Made a Video About Washing Machines: In the US Washing Machines Tend to be Quite Different Than Those Found Outside the US. The "Biggest" Difference is that US Washing Machines tend to be significantly larger and in the US many homes have a "Laundry Room" that is dedicated to holding just the washing machine and dryer. We had received a number or requests asking us to do this video, so we wanted to help our fellow travelers who had asked. I hope that helps!

  2. Thank you!!We have always been so confused. Waking up at night at 2am..machine still washing..waking up at 4, 7, etc and lavatrice STILL rotating .aaarrgggh .lolol . Grazie molto!

  3. i'm a bit late to this video, do not use liquid detergent in the drawer. if you pour it in the drawer, it will immediately go into the drum. and many of the newer front loader, when you star the cycle, will first drain any of the liquids and then start adding water. meaning your detergent is already expelled without being used. instead, put it in the bottle cap and into the drum and then start the wash cycle.

  4. 1:11 i for one think this is acctually really big. like who needs anything this long, am i right? i think something smaller, around four inches is perfectly enough, and that would probably also have a super nice personality to go along with it.

  5. Hello! At 3:00 :
    The first button is play.
The second button is for a prewash.
The 3rd button is for an extra rinse.
The 4th one is for no spin cycle.
The final one is where you turn off and on the machine.
Please remember that on every single washing machine these settings will vary. Please search on google the manual of the model number you will see in a corner of the machine, it will have instructions, and it surely will in english.

  6. I love to watch your videos and that one of the important messages you bring all the time is to respect the local cultures.

As for washers – in the US the so called HE washing machine are pretty much like in Europe – just they don't heat up water unless you select a sanitizing wash. They use the warm water out of the apartment / home.

  7. For everyday clothes use sintetichs 30 is cool 40 is warm 60 is hot and 90 extra hot! For towels cottons bedding use cotton, thats because sintetics is american easy care or ifon so get more water and more gentle tymble and less wrinkles in the clothes, if necessary i allways use extrarinse option! Oh, i forgot sintetics is even shorter than cotton

  8. Eco takes 4 hours in Portugal? Wow. I can only speak for Britain but all recent machines have a high-speed economy setting, about 20-30 mins, including spin. Unless the clothes are filthy I don't see any point using anything else

  9. I live in the UK and the washer you used was a Beko there are millions of other brands out their and ones with bigger space in the drum that was 5kg there are 6kg 7kg 8kg 9kg 10kg 11kg and 12kg which can hold more clothes than the washer you used in this video

  10. Hi Jocelyn! I'm watching this video in 2021.
It caught my attention because I lived in Brazil/US/Europe now, and all I can think of is: "is it so different than in the US?! What?"
It is always fun to watch these videos. Thank you for the content 🙂

  11. you should take a look at the european topload washer- its like our fronloaders, but not even close to the american toploaders. and honey…. NO SPIN is for cashmere and other delicate wool. you have to lay it wet on the racket to not to destroy it. thats why you have the NO SPIN option on the machine

  12. I am Dutch and used one time an American washing machine on a camping. There wassomething inside that pushes your clothes inside around. It made holes in some clothes and the clothes of our children were still with stains from grass and sand. The cycle took only about 45 minutes. Too short to clean well.

  13. So it takes 4 to 20 times longer to do laundry loads of a fraction of the size as in the US. I guess no more waiting 1 or 2 weeks to do laundry like in the US. I plan on moving to Europe for political reasons despite the recent good news.

  14. This video is GOLD! I am presently shopping for a washer outside the U.S. and the dashboards on these puppies are dizzying! I mean, RPMs? Really?? TMI, IMO!!!

Compounding the confusion is the need to constantly convert kilograms, centimeters, and currency as I’m negotiating (yes, the sticker price is but a suggestion) in a language I have yet to master. 😓

I even nicked my finger while clumsily opening the spring-loaded tumbler of a top-loading model (front-loaders being notorious for mold) and the saleswoman stared at me like I was from Mars. “Sorry, lady, I have never seen one of these before, now get over it!” 🤬
