Today we’re discussing the Hungarian residency by investment program, which will give you access to the EU and the Schengen zone.
You can maintain this residency without a minimum stay requirement, which is amazing! In order to qualify you’d need to form a company and buy two properties in Hungary.
This program is quite unique because you don’t actually need to live in Hungary or pay taxes in order to maintain your residency. Most other EU residency programs will require you to spend at least 6 months per year in the country, which will trigger taxes. It is not the case here.
This residency by investment program may be a better option than Portugal or Greek residency by investment programs, because of the amount of money you’d need to put in.
But what about obtaining Hungarian citizenship at one point? Well, this is where things get tricky. You’d actually NEED to physically spend time in the country in order to qualify, you’d need to live there for at least 8 years, and you’d need to pass a language test, which is not easy at all!
So, if you’re looking for a second passport this may not be the easiest option, but if you want to have an EU residency without any commitments this program is something that is definitely worth considering.

If you are an EU passport holder and you establish residency in Hungary using the much simpler method for EU citizens (ie. proof of funds to support yourself and health insurance), would there be a minimum stay requirement to renew said residency?

Great news on the Hungarian program. Can you provide more details on min investment and if any holding period. Does the residency entitle you to their public healthcare. For US citizens no tax in Europe is a good one.

Is that a permanent or temporary residency? Is there a minimum investment amount for both properties? Any types of property not allowed?
We are in Hungary now and planning on being here 2 months in our search to find where we would like to live on a more permanent basis. Hard to get to know locals since there are so many tourists. Experience so far is the Serbians are more friendly, at least initially. Luckily my wife qualifies for citizenship by descent in Hungary…trying to learn the language and its really hard. 35 cases for nouns verses Slavic where there is 7. We found Serbian easier…not that we know either of them very good.
Buda seems to he the place to be if you want it to be more quiet. District 3 seems nice. District 6 is nice if you want to he downtown without way too much noise.

Hungarian is a tough nut to crack. A very different language from all other Romance/Germanic languages.
