In The Mood for Alentejo: Part 1 | Underrated Region in Portugal | Evora & Monsaraz

This is Alentejo, a rural, sparsely populated region in Portugal that’s quietly whispered between conversations about Portuguese destinations. Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, all seem to be winning laurels, but Alentejo is winning hearts. It’s the largest region in the country, covering about a third of entire mainland Portugal, and offering vast swathes of farmlands, idyllic countryside, from flatlands to rolling hills, from ancient cities to magical, untouched villages overlooking horizons of incredibly vast landscapes.

On the first part of this Alentejo series, I explored the mystical city of Évora, the gateway to the Alto Alentejo (Upper Alentejo), discovering the city’s ancient charms, Roman structures, gothic cathedrals and grisly catacombs. And then went beyond the city to explore one of the most breathtaking hilltop villages I’ve ever seen, the magical Monsaraz, the village near the sky.

A great thank you to my friends Therese (who’s always game for adventure!) and Rosanna, who’s an inspiration and an Alentejana herself, graciously introducing us to this wonderful region.

Hope you enjoy this brand-new IN THE MOOD FOR LIFE episode! ❤️

  1. Thanks for watching this Alentejo episode! As you notice, this is Part 1 , so everything is left open for other parts. Which parts of Alentejo do you think I should explore/feature next? Would love to hear your recommendations! 👍✨

  2. Your voice and diction are fantastic as well as the video capture and editing! And you are saying the "oo" of words that end in a final 'o' which non Portuguese speakers never seem to catch onto. Parabens!!

  3. Janz, discovered your work today. Lovely videos, enticing and beautifully photographed. We can feel your passion for Portugal, which really makes the films particularly pleasant and special. Please review the typos in this one. And congrats for the work overall!

  4. I'm Portuguese and I so look forward to your videos. You make me miss it so and for a few moments I find myself transported lost in all its beauty…. I am so in THE MOOD for Portugal Thank you

  5. We are very impressed with your Portuguese travel videos. The government travel bureau should use them!!! Can't wait to go back. My husband is Azorean on both sides of his family. I wish we could retire to Coimbra!

  6. Another fan here. It took me a little while to get your videos… then I realized you were after somethign the other videos did not bother to capture – the newness is amazing. love it.

  7. You should be given an honorary portuguese passport by my country's government!
You show Portugal so proudly, more than some nationals.
    Just beautiful.
Thank you for showing my hometown Èvora in this well detailed, beautiful and emotional way.
I send you a big hug for that!
    Congrats for your great work.

  8. Wow amazing video, a short, effecient and well shot, Portugal should be thankful for such a great video and the way you show the country.
Just one small correction but more of a technicality. The Azores is actually Portugal biggest regionin term of territorial extension, sure its a autonomous region and i know alot of people dont see it as truly "Portugal", but still is according to Portuguese constitution. Its even bigger then "Mainland" Portugal, you should check it out, and alot of Azoreans came from Alentejo.
And i love how you say portuguese words, most foreign people try to say it in a "spanish" way, which is so wrong, you truly got it. And with this video im hungry and with a huge desire of visting Alentejo.

  9. Time and time again I watch your masterpieces and I can’t wait for my move to Portugal in September of this year. My only selfish wish is that each video was longer. I guess that’s the magic of your creations is it leaves us wanting to explore more ourselves. I’m still waiting for your piece of Ericeira my new hometown in the near future. Your channel should have 1m subs!

  10. Have done a lot of trips to Portugal from Canada with my husband who is Portuguese but watching your videos is amazing and gives me ideas for places to see on future visits. Thank you.
