Is it TOO LATE to move to Portugal?

It’s a simple question with a complicated answer, and there are other questions connected to the subject that I believe are also important to ask and analyze to figure out if it’s too late for an individual and their specific set of interests/circumstances to move to Portugal. In reality the answer to the question could vary from person to person. To have an easier transition in to expat life in Portugal, it’s not just the legal aspects of your move abroad that will have an impact but also some of other practical external influences around you. In this living abroad expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we’ll approach the question and get into if it is too late to move to Portugal or not.

  1. Great topic Rafael!

I’m hearing so much about how rental prices are rising (particularly in Lisbon proper) we’re definitely wondering if its “too late” for us to consider Lisbon and some of the surrounding areas. IOW—why leave one rat race to join another? 🤷

For this reason, we’re considering other locations in PT (admittedly a somewhat maddening effort 🤯 ) or Italy (our “Plan B”).

When the time is right for us (hopefully soon), we’ll consider if the value (a personal assessment for sure) of moving to PT is more, the same or less than where we live today or in Italy. Honestly, it’s difficult to know without making that leap.

Always appreciate your videos and sharing your knowledge, wisdom & experience. 👍🏻

  2. Honestly I think the point about culture and only going so far within it is pretty common even in your own country. in Portland where we live, you may never get close with the locals because you didn’t grow up there. Same as what you were saying about being an expat. We’ve been in Portugal for a week now (vacation) and really like it but yeah I can see how it’s going to be a bit of a challenge around most everything. We also liked Braga as well but I think we feel most comfortable in Porto as it just feel familiar somehow. Love the people. So nice. Lot of dudes put their hands on me. That’s going to take some getting use to. Haha

  3. For us, it has been a very easy journey in Portugal. We are open minded and we have patience – want to learn local history, culture and the language with respect for the country/people. I saw that the president mentioned that the golden visa had fulfilled it's purpose… days are numbered?

  4. Some great perspectives on the question. My wife and I were all around Portugal last summer, and we plan on going again this next summer with my daughter. We are going to move there either soon or wait until my daughter is in college and we can then retire over there. Personally, I want nothing more than to fully embrace the Portuguese culture and lifestyle.
On our first trip, we traveled all over going from Braga to Salema and everything in between. This next visit, we are going to stay in Braga and Coimbra and just live in each spot for a week to get a sense of what it's like to live there as a regular person.
I think the allure of moving there will fade for some over time. I've been planning this move for 2 years already, so I am fully vested and on board with it.
