Is Ligue 1 Actually a FARMERS League?! | Explained

If you head onto social media and type in Ligue Un it’s not hard to find several people calling it a farmers league. Only recently, the Lionel Messi fan club have busted out the phrase in droves, furious that PSG fans had the audacity to boo the Argentine maestro against Bordeaux! The insult claims that Ligue Un is a division of semi-professionals who farm in the day and play football by night. In short, it’s an allegation that the French topflight isn’t up to scratch.

This notion has been exasperated thanks to Paris Saint-Germain’s stranglehold over the domestic game. Champions on 7 occasions since 2012, their overwhelming success and Qatari wealth has often cast a shadow on their domestic rivals who struggle for recognition or respect. Le Parisiens own failings in the Champions League has emboldened Ligue Un’s critics too, with the club being dumped out in the last-16 4 times in the past 6 years.

But is there actually any evidence to suggest Ligue Un suffers from a lack of quality? Or is the ‘farmers league’ moniker a lazy joke that is running out of comedic value? This week on Euro Football Daily Explained we decided to cross the English Channel and find out…

  1. Very good league. Although I think the criticism is that France is a really big and rich country, with an incredible history of producing players, so really Ligue 1 should be at least as good as those leagues in Italy and Germany.

  2. Ligue 1 is great. I watched a few games of lower side the Ligue 1 and some Turkish league top side games. I feel even the lower side Ligue 1 has way more organization and quality than the Turkish clubs who constantly end up in Champions league

  3. I'm so sorry for Messi, but the LIGUE 1 is a far cry from LA LIGA. Which happens to be the best ligue in all Europe. And i kno' i kno' the premier fan boys will come in droves to attack me. Yet REAL MADRID most 🏆 in the champions and SEVILLA most 🏆 in the Europa league. Numbers don't lie.

  4. Thank you. All the other leagues always take players from Ligue 1. Other than PSG it’s so hard to build on a team when this happens. I guess Bernardo Silva is a farmer then???

If that Monaco team could stay together, Lille from a few years ago too things would be different. These clubs constantly sell and rebuild which is a credit to them.

There is more to life than the Premier League

  5. Take PSG out of the equation and Ligue 1 is not better than the Dutch or Portuguese leagues. Although France is a much bigger country with a stronger economy (at least compared with Portugal) and better TV deals. The fact that they "export" their talents every year and need to rebuild the squads also applies to the Dutch and Portuguese.
I don't know if it's a farmer's league but it's an average league, way below the top 4.

  6. PSG have destroyed the credibility of Ligue 1. With every UCL collapse they have,it reflects badly on the entire French League since they absolutely wallop domestic teams and cannot replicate that in Europe.
Sadly, the FARMER'S League moniker is right..ie they are farming talents for other leagues to harvest

  7. You simply can't compare Ligue 1 to Bundesliga 🤷‍♂️ PSG is built on petrol money and can't win shit with Neymar, Messi and Mbappe.

Yeah, Bayern is also dominating the league for a decade already, but they proved themselves in Europe too. And the other teams are going strong with the likes of BVB, Red Bull, Borussia M. and other pretty big teams with talented players. Meanwhile France has PSG, OL, OM and Lille and a bunch of loosers fighting for the 5th place and below. And you can't say that Ligue 1 produces great players; France does. They rejected Kante and other great players who made it big elsewhere. So no, they are not a product of Ligue 1 just because they are from France.

  8. Great script. This narrative is often pushed by Premier League fans who almost look down upon any fans who dare enjoy another league. The ridiculous EPL funds are more evenly split between its top-flight teams than any other league, but richer doesn’t always mean better. Ligue 1 is a great watch on most match days. Love the video!

  9. If you look at the front 3 none of them work back so the other teams can attack them easily and outnumbered them, the biggest mistake is that they should of played Di Maria on the right and dropped Messi into attacking midfield with Verrati and Paredes just behind.

  10. I only watch Premier League and Ligue 1. Both deserve to be respected, the latter is just looked down upon because of how far PSG pulls away from the rest of the pack. But besides that, the competition is exciting to watch as many other teams are on a similar level.

  11. It’s because they are. Bundesliga especially is with Bayern traditionally poaching all their rivals best players. It keeps those leagues from becoming truly competitive and has Bayern monopolizing the league. Ligue 1 has similar issues with PSG who do similar and have won for years. Serie A had similar with Juventus (who also bought from rivals, Recent Example: Vlahovic). EPL & La Liga doesn’t have those issues where there are multiple top teams and this ‘poaching’ tradition isn’t prominent.

  12. Back then, Ligue 1 was competitive. Lyon winning 7 straight titles despite Marseille and Bordeaux pushing them. Bordeaux ending the streak. Marseille winning the league and Lille follow suit and Montpellier becoming an unlikely Ligue 1 winner thanks to Giroud and Cabella. Since the Qatar takeover, PSG dominated Ligue 1 bar 2017 when Monaco won it and last season when Lille won it.

French clubs have a shocking record in European football. Multiple finals reached losing all but one in 1993 when Marseille won the Champions league against Milan. Since then, no French clubs won a European title again. No French clubs have ever one the Europa league/ UEFA cup. It's a shame that Ligue 1 has talented players but couldn't translate into European success. Ligue 1 is anything but a farmer's league yes the league is terrible since no clubs can match PSG in terms of finance but if Lille and Monaco was able to win Ligue 1 then maybe once the PSG project fails completely then Ligue 1 will be competitive yet again.

  13. The phrase “farmers league” used to be a classist insult against teams from weaker economies who’s people may have to farm for a living, not a claim a larger team farming to others. I first remember arsenal fans using when they had to enter europa league for the first time in a while and play against teams from countries like moldova or romania. now the phrase has evolved to a general insult against any league considered not competitive.

  14. the only reason the premier league is ahead of the other leagues, is because of money. imagine if smaller teams in serie a or la liga had the money that awful teams like fullham, norwich have

  15. The French ligue is brilliant with very physical and technician players the problem is that im not sure that tactically their coaches can compare with those from italy Germany and even Portugal
