Lisbon and the Algarve

Rick Steves’ Europe Travel Guide | We start in Lisbon, where salty sailors’ quarters and wistful fado singers mix with ornate architecture to recall the glory days when Vasco da Gama and Magellan made Portugal a world power. Then on to the Algarve where we explore the Land’s End of Europe — windy and historic Cape Sagres — before savoring pristine beaches and arm-wrestling octopuses in the sleepy fishing village of Salema. © 2004 Rick Steves’ Europe #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #portugal

  2. Fantastic video regarding some of the history of Portugal. However, I’m a master historian and those in the medieval world did not believe that the earth was flat, that was clearly known and protested since the ancient time of Eratosthenes in the 3rd century BCE.

  3. Presumably there is a whole episode given over to Algarve because this is pretty thin fare . Also I don´t like the advert for the pousada at the end. Why even combine Lisbon with Algarve? Gosto muito de Portugal mas merece melhor.

  5. I once saw a good documentary on TV about Portugal. It was saying that the Portuguese (the Porra Porras 🙂 ) have a yearning for their seafaring days. It was part of their culture, part of their identity.
Portugal also had a dictator, Salazar. As a result, the resulting government ruled until 1974. It also caused Portugal to be very isolated. So, Portuguese people from Angola and Mozambique knew much more about the outside world.

  6. I was taken to the Algarve as child in 1971, well before it was paved over. It looked to me like most people did not own cars, but got around on mopeds and donkey carts. Life was very sleepy and backwards. Away from the coast towards the interior there was nothing at all. 50% of the cars were VWs.

  7. After coming back from Canada to Poland and finishing my University degree in Philosophy in 2011
I hitch hiked, couch surfed, and volunteered my way from the top of Portugal coast Afife all the way down to Sagres and than some. I planned to go there for two weeks but stayed 3 months, total cost 300 Euro.
I hope to go back there one day and buy some land, build some houses out of clay etc.
    Thanks again Steve
