Lord Frost Finds A Brexit Benefit – EU Country Allows Brits To Use E-Gates?

Since leaving the EU Brexiteers have been trying to come up with benefits and it has been a struggle. However it seems the former Brexit Minister Lord Frost may have found one, in his mind. E-passports and e-gates. Boris Johnson’s former negotiator and minister believes the fact that Portugal is now letting British people use e-gates is a sign of a benefit of Brexit?

  1. Apart from the expensive proof of Covid negativity, the Polish border guard waved me through (after quickly stamping passport) without a look at any other paperwork. My problem was getting back into England with totally confusing, long and ambiguous paperwork.

  2. As usual the brexit newspapers in England made it a brexit positive issue where it is not.

E-Gates are part of an EU wide program for fast access to 3rd country citizens. Portugal is just ahead of the pack introducing a whopping 4 gates at Lisboa Airport (morst English fly to Faro Airport btw) that is open to use by citizens of several 3rd countries.

But I am sure the brexiters feel spesjul again and will shout from the rooftops how important they are for the Portuguese economy.

But remember, the more you shout about it, the less it is true.

  3. This is not news, this is desperation! No sunny uplands, no cake, no unicorn, no easy access to the SM, no international crowd waiting at the doorstep of #10 eager to make a deal with Global Britian!

  4. But E-gates are used throughout the world but this doesn't mean to say you don't have to comply with visa and entry requirements like ESTA or ETIAS requirements or 90 day tourist limits, if you fail to meet these requirements you probably find the E-Gate won't open.

  5. i never used a e-gate in my live, maybe one reason is, i never used a port of entry here in the EU, because i am inside the EU all my time, crossing borders inside only and never plan to set foot on the UK in the future!

  6. This is actually part of the pilot scheme leading up to ETIAS and the new entry-exit formalities. The e-gates for UK, Australian, NZ, Japanese and Singaporean nationals will be taking their fingerprints and bring tested on how effectively the traveller can be identified as the genuine holder of the passport. It is also being trialled at some EU land borders. I heard that Bulgaria is taking part in that aspect. EU/EEA/CH nationals pass through simple e-gates where they just scan their ID cards or passports.

  7. Wow the Portuguese Government acting in the best interest of the Portuguese Tourist industry. Almost like they exhibit intelligent leadership. I can see why Lord Frost is confused given what he was ennobled for doing
