Moving to Portugal, or any other country, can be both exhilarating and terrifying. We are often asked for recommendations on areas to live based on certain criteria. In this video I provide my top 3 tips to help frame your thoughts when deciding where to live.
What was true for Portugal in 2021 is not necessarily true in 2022. Additionally, it is not as simple as “everything is more expensive.” Yes, things have changed in the last year, but what do those changes actually mean in real life? The answer is different for everyone. My best advice is to come see for yourself.

"Know yourself" is good advice. I talked to a guy who bought a semi-attached home in the Algarve, who said he had underestimated his tolerance for noise. He ended up selling and buying a single family detached house. It's easy to get caught up in romanticizing the move and ignore your own personality traits.

The housing prices in Portugal have gotten ridiculously insane. One of the reasons people move to Portugal is because of the low cost of living. Since those costs have significantly increased I wouldn't advise anyone to move to Portugal unless their monthly rental budget is $1500 – $2000 for a decent 2-bedroom apartment. If they are looking to purchase they should expect to pay more than double per square meter ($16 euros/m2 has gone up to $40-$45 euros/m2); even Airbnb's are $3000-4000 per month.
Thanks Kirsten for another informative and common-sense video. My bones are telling me many may also be asking “Where should I live?” as they may be not familiar enough with the living options in PT. Maybe I’m wrong about that. 🤔 Most shocking to me was the increase in monthly rent of your former apartment in Porto. 💸Incredible! 😳 This reality is making me feel like I’m about to enter another rat race—which I trying to avoid in the first place. We’re at least 2 years away from a move and hopefully the bubble will burst and this trend will change—otherwise we may have to regroup. Thanks as always for your excellent information. 👍🏻

We found our forever home…A year ago we picked up, packed our car and took a chance moving to Lisbon! It all worked out, but I agree things are different today versus a year ago!!! We got lucky with our rental and our house!!! Portugal is changing, but I am locked in to my fabulous adopted country!!! Great vlog so thx!!
