Moving to PORTUGAL: Part 2 (Getting your NIF number)

When you move to PORTUGAL, you can’t do anything without a NIF number. This is your fiscal number and it is literally the first thing you need to do. In this video I explain how you get the NIF number as a citizen with an EU passport or as a citizen with a non-EU passport.
Here’s a link to apply online if you have an EU passport. You might get extra info here as well. fbclid=IwAR36nTUQzRyajadhxQkXyuqAsLFAXWAUdEJ13uKjE0NrDQ2JbZqKmse uKkE

  1. Hi Cindy. Thanks for the video. When you say that EU citizens can apply online, do you have any other info on that? From what I found, only businesses can do that. If I go to Portugal and rent short term accommodation (airbnb), before transitioning to longer term accommodation, I am confused about what proof of address I would be able to submit. I need proof of address in Portugal, but I can't get a long term rental as I don't have an NIF. On the other hand, I can't get proof of address in Portugal (utility bills etc) needed for NIF issuance, because I don't have a long term rental. If I have left my home EU nation for Portugal, it would also be dishonest to use proof of address for my former home in Ireland. Any pointers on this?

  2. Thank you for the information, Cindy. As I am thinking about homesteading in Portugal, your channel helps me a lot. I've got a question not related to NIF but related to permission to live on land that we purchase legally. I understand that if there is a ruin/ building of some sort on the land which is not protected, rustic or forest agricultural then it is possible to apply for it. What I am confused about is the kind of building that can be granted with the permit. Is an agricultural building possible or it has to be an urban/ commercial building? Thanks in advance for your reply.

  3. Thank you Cindy. Another very crucial bit of info via your post. We have EU passports and am still waiting for the borders in SA to open. Do you think we could apply for this tax no at the Portuguese Consulate or Embassy in S A before we move to Portugal being residents in SA?

  4. Hi, I finally got the NIF the other day but its got so much tougher now. You can't actually go there physically any longer but it must be done online with a power of attorney.

It took a week and it cost about 100 euros in legal fees but I guess you could do it cheaper.
