Mt. Pico is the highest mountain in Portugal, at 2,351 metres (7,713 ft) above sea level, and is one of the highest Atlantic mountains; it is more than twice the elevation of any other peak in the Azores!
Distance: 8 km round trip from Mountain’s House to the summit.
Elevation: 1120 m
OUR Duration: 2 hour up (we don’t make stops!) and 2 hour down.
Transport: we used taxi 30 euro up and 25 euro down
Remember to book permission (25 euro per person).
Route can be divided in 5 parts:
-middle steep – narrow path
-steep , path is ok
-gentle slope
-crater – almost flat
-Pinquito – steep, max 20 m scrambling
Places to stop:
– 1 st. smal crater
– Flat place
– After steep part
– Near crater or in crater
– On the top if not windy
Go slowly down, enjoy views of Faial and Pico islands.
My opinion to this route: route is technically easy. Only you have to be in good physical shape. Views are amazing.
Of course, this hike is number one in this islands group, but is overrated. After 1000nd km hikes in many mountains this hike was not surprised my. Just one cross more in my hiking check list – PICO DONE…
