Beijinos e abraços,
Carissa, Iwan, Frankie & Albi

Carissa, Iwan & Frankie decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month they were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call their new home. We picked up Albi the cat along the way. Subscribe to follow our journey as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

  1. Will you continue with the decoration of it? You are very talented and with your ideas and the help of your friends, your house is going to look great. Are you going to build a bedroom and a toilet inside the house? Or add another building joining your kitchen? You don't have to answer my questions, it's your own business but I can see your house has a lot of potential. My sister renovated my greatgrandparents 'house and it looks amazing in Arganil, Coimbra district. Hugs and kisses.

  2. Every living thing at your place is thriving (even if it may be wearing a protective cone). Always good to see you with your Uncle St. Nick & Andrea helping one another. Clever to take up running to heat up for the outdoor shower in the colder months… bonus: cardio and agility. 💖

  3. New floor looks excellent! And Nick is a good teacher. For future reference, I've always found doing the grouting with a sturdy rubber glove is easier and quicker than trying to do it with a trowel or a sponge, and as you've found, it's best to sponge the thicker waste off the tiles while wet..!
Now, I noticed Carissa made an apologetic comment about the shelving unit you had to move out of the kitchen, which clearly has no bracing across either the ends or the back.
Bracing is essential on open rustic shelves!
One solution would be to put a length of 2×1 or 3×1 diagonally across the space between the shelves.
Another might be to use gussets at each of the 90deg angles in the corners under the shelves, or even simpler, over the top of the corner/joins.
Essentially, look thru your scrap pile for some thin board. Plywood, particle board, whatever. Around 6mm is enough, but perhaps less in ply. Make up some right-angled triangular pieces with approx 100-150mm on either side of the right angle, and the hypotenuse whatever.
If the shelves are a bit too ricketty, it will pay you to glue and nail or screw these on the external surface of the uprights and the shelves at the back.
If you want to go fancy and 'joinery shop detail', you could make them exactly to fit under the front and back rails, and the vertical legs. Might need some sanding/grinding to make them fit 'exactly'.
Point is, without bracing the shelves will always be 'ricketty' and threatening to fall apart. WITH proper gussets or bracing they will be sturdy, reliable and feel like 'furniture' not gimcrack..!
    Art is in the details…!!
PS: Nice piece of art for Jasper! He will love it!
PPS: The issue with the drop saw cutting out will be its high initial demand on the battery system. It's probably a 2400W draw, and I guess your little battery is not up to that continuously. Best to run it off the generator. But check the specs on the battery thing. And I mean the fine detail, as some of those portable power station things while rated for a decent wattage can't actually provide it in full when requested, say for the start up of a power saw.

  4. I wish I had a nick and Ange to show me DIY and garden/ cooking. I really enjoy you helping each other and I learn too. Look forward to seeing your next jobs planned. Hope you are feeling the benefit of the log fire 🔥 now. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

  7. HAPPY SATURDAY FROM IDAHO U.S.A. ITS A GLORIOUS 10 DEGREES HERE.. YIKES!. JUST MADE A CUP A JAVA AND SOME NICE JAZZ MUSIC ON YUR INTRO… THATS HOW I START MY SATURDAY. YUR HOMESTEAD HAS COME SO FAR, IVE BEEN FOLLOWING FOR QUITE SOME TIME AND THE PROGRESS HAS REALLY TAKEN OFF. UNCLE NICK IS A WEALTH OF MENTORSHIP. HES A HOOT, AND GREAT TEACHER. I FOLLOW THEM TOO. MAYBE SOON IF THE BLESSINGS GET DISTRIBUTED ACCORDINGLY I CAN HELP WITH SOME UPGRADES, I PRAY BLESSINGS ON ALL MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS WORLDWIDE! AND MAYBE SOME DAY SOON, WE CAN ALL BE BLESSED. THERES A LOT HAPPENING VERY FAST, SO LOOK UP, STAY IN THE MOMENT AND CARRY ON…. YOLO. BE BLESSED!

  8. WOW! Beautiful tile and kitchen! You two are so tough after all the hardships you have gone through! Uncle Nick is fantastic! I know you are looking forward to a warmer shower space! You are making constant progress toward your goals. I am so pleased for you both! Hugs

  9. Oh please don't burn the pretty logs. Use them in some sort of project that shows them off and maybe sell (if you don't fall in love with them). Seriously if you were to make me a couple coasters from that 1st log shown, then I would buy them and obviously pay postage for them. My late dad was a forester so would be a nice homage to him. Please consider this for me . As for rest of video I love your video's. Wish I had uncle Nick here. Love you guys x

  10. Diego is able to lick the surgery site because his collar is to loose. It needs to be pulled forward so that the collar extends 3" + beyond the tip of his nose. Then tightened so he can't push it back. That's why the scarf is helping because it prevents the collar from moving back.

  11. I loved that log with beautiful rings!! Pls don't burn it. It's gorgeous. Thank you Uncle Nick, what a guy with a ❤️of gold. So happy to see you guys slowly but surely getting your home tiled. Keep up the great work and wishes for Diego's quick recoup… The poor baby. Hugs fm Santarém 🇵🇹

  12. I am terrible about chopping wood. There are videos .. One I liked shows strapping the one you want to chop onto a big log. I have used a chain saw. I think it is a big chore for my little saw and when splitting it isn't smooth so makes more natural fire starters.

  13. Kitchen floor is looking great, I've always grouted with my fingers, less messy & goes exactly where I want it to just in the gaps.
Poor Diogo he must be quite sore, hope he has some pain relief.
Good luck with the chicken enclosure improvements. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
