Our off grid water system FAILS | Portugal Farm Renovation

This week our off grid water system fails us and we have no water on the farm. Last week we made upgrades to it that have clearly caused us a problem. We also up-cycle some of the old wooden parts of the wine farm into an already much-loved part of our home.

  1. I don't know very much about plumbing, but wonder, if you get another air lock, instead of pushing it back with scarce remaining water, could you hook up an air compressor and use that to blow air down the pipe? Sorry if someone else already suggested.

  2. Love, love, love the table.! Can not wait to see the end result! I love the property. You have made such a difference already! Will be waiting for the next one! Stay safe.

  3. Wow you guys! The way you navigate the trials and tribulations with such grace, encouragement for each other and optimism is to be admired. I absolutely love following your journey ❤️

  4. Well done! For both: beautiful table renovation and water fixing 👍🏻 bravo Tara for your optimism and support and bravo John 🙌 it’s amazing how much work you done from the start of the project🤩

  5. Phew, I was literally holding my breath, anxiously waiting for the water to continue running!!! 😂 Glad that's sorted….. keep pressing on, I'm enjoying the progress.

  6. Oh I felt your pain re the water. Well done family.
The table just fits in with the rustic ambience, what hard work John.
The disappointment when Crusoe couldn't eat his watermelon after his excitement – that boy is a joy.

  7. I didn't believe, at first, that the top was oak, but after a little research, it looks a bit like holm oak. It's not a species I'm familiar with (I've collected and carved over 178 different species of wood, so I'm a bit of a wood geek @serial_carver). Quercus ilex is a Mediterranean evergreen oak. There was a HUGE deforestation of pines and oaks from the mid 1600's through the mid 1800s which deforested a minimum of 73% to a maximum of 96% of total forest cover in Portugal, alone! Holm oak has been used, historically for construction, and those pieces definitely qualify for that category. Do you have any holm oak on your property? If you did, holm oak is one of the top three trees used in the establishment of truffle orchards. Just saying.

  8. I was about to ask my father if he knew someone (a plumber) in Gerês, l'm in Porto and my father is in the owner of a construction business! Glad you have water again!!! For the table maybe use broken tiles from any renovations you guys are going to do!!! Always looks very rustic and farmhouse chic!!!

  9. Hello. Beautiful restoration of the table your husband did 🤗and congratulations to your dad on the plumbing situation with the water 😀🎉yay🎉👍 good job DAD. Looking forward to more projects on the property. I would love to live in Portugal.😍✋

  10. If you can't find tiles of the size or design you like, you could cut a piece of timber to fit and stencil a design on it. Either carve it and fill it, as you did between the planks, or paint it and then put several layers of varnish to protect the design. Maybe the easiest would be to make your own design using tiny mosaic tiles e.g. in two colours. Something fairly random and rough looking, maybe with different shaped mosaic tiles, would work well in that uneven space. Cutting small mosaic tiles is fiddly!
