  1. better and more accurate than west, north-west, mid-west, south-west, south-east, north-east and mid-atlantic… also, we usually use the sub-regions, (minho, tras-os-montes e alto douro, douro litoral, beira litoral, beira alta, beira baixa, ribatejo, alto alentejo, baixo alentejo, and algarve).
americans take one year to learn 50 states + 51 capitals. we learn 20 districts or autonomous regions and 2 capitals of autonomous regions, the capital of the country and of the districts we already know since they are the same as the districts. we also learn the parishes of our municipalities and the municipalities of our districts, which are easy to learn since the municipalities are the same as the capital of municipalities and the parishes are the same as the village(s), town or city in them, unless the city is very large, in which case the parishes are different to the city, but there is never more than one city in the same municipality, so its the same as learning about villages…
it’s not about being fun, it’s about being effective. if americans used the same method of naming places they. be better at domestic geography than what they are now.

  2. You just need to dig a little bit deeper, to local names. Portugal has a TON of absolutely hilarious ones. Here's a few:

    ORELHUDO (Big-eared)
    CABEÇUDO (Big-headed)
    PAITORTO (bent dad)
    PORCA (sow-female pig)
    QUINTA DE COMICHÃO (itchy estate)
VALE DA RATA (female rat valley – it has a funny double meaning in European Portuguese)
VILA NOVA DO COITO (New coitus village)
    CABEÇA GORDA (Fat head)
DEIXA O RESTO (leave the rest)
    PAU GORDO (fat d*ck)
POUCA FARINHA (too little [wheat] flower)
    VALE DE AZIA (heartburn valley)
VENDA DAS RAPARIGAS (brat's sale; this one is funnier in Brazilian Portuguese. Look it up)
    CASAL DO GRÊLO (Clitoris couple)
    CHIQUEIRO (pigsty)
    ENDIABRADA (devilish)
    MALAVADO (badly washed)
    PINTALHOS (d*ck pieces)
    PUNHETE (w*nk)
    TRASEIROS (buttocks)
    VINHA DA DESGRAÇA (disgrace vineyard)

  3. All this talk about "Portugal should be part of Spain" you should be reminded that Portugal existed wayyyy before Spain did including the language. "Spain should be part of Portugal" should be the actual quote

  4. Israel is the same way (North, Center, South, Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem), made weirder by the fact that each of these areas has multiple historical names that are largely still in colloquial use.
