Durante séculos Quarteira foi uma modesta aldeia de pescadores, situada à beira de uma praia com 3 Km de extensão e rodeada por pinhais. D. Dinis outorgou-lhe foral a 15 de Novembro de 1297. Já no século XV, D. João I mandou proceder aqui às primeiras experiências de cultivo de cana de açúcar.
O povoamento da área de Quarteira remonta, pelo menos, à época romana, e não falta quem pretenda identificar esta aldeia com a antiga Carteia. E há mesmo quem defenda que a povoação remonta ao período pré-romano (fenício, cartaginês).
Criada em 1916, a Freguesia de Quarteira é hoje bem conhecida dos portugueses pela magnífica praia, pelo peixe da melhor qualidade e pelos seus bosques de pinheiros mansos. A isto acresce a vertente piscatória, potencial importantíssimo não só pela riqueza que produz, como pela tipicidade que encerra, constituindo por isso uma das atracções dos turistas. Nesta freguesia encontra-se sediado o maior empreendimento turístico privado da Europa que é Vilamoura.
Compõe-se de diversos tipos de oferta turística, desde os hotéis de grande qualidade, o casino, os restaurantes, os bares, as discotecas, os campos de golfe e as praias. No seio deste empreendimento, de características únicas no mundo, outra das valências que a freguesia de Quarteira oferece aos seus visitantes é a Marina de Vilamoura, um dos ex-líbris da região algarvia, de importância inquestionável para o Algarve e para o País.Golfe, na vertente desportivo-turística, representa, para esta freguesia, para o Concelho de Loulé e para toda a região Algarvia, uma extraordinária contribuição económica e, muito especialmente, um forte contributo para a redução da sazonalidade durante a chamada época baixa.
