This has been a tough year for our farm. A heatwave and an ongoing drought has pushed our plants, trees, animals and crops to their limits. Fortunately our wells still have water and our trees are surviving without supplementary irrigation. We have learned a lot from this Summer season and have a lot more to learn in future!
We are Ken & Gina. 2.5 years ago, we got fed up with paying a mortgage and having to work boring office jobs just to keep our heads above water! We decided to take a big chance, sell everything, and buy a motorhome, which we used to drive our remaining belongings and our pets to Portugal. We bought a beautiful farm in Central Portugal where we live with our 3 dogs, 2 cats and a bunch of other farm animals. Every week we release new episodes of our Portugal Farm Life where you can get an inside look at how we live and adapt to the challenges of our new lives.

Pls don’t start showing houses for sale that’s the reason I UNFOLLOWED other channels. This is just me but I don’t want to hear about $20,000 dollar house that none of us can afford. Love the videos
Hi Gina and Ken, I‘ve been kind of binge watching your videos the last couple of weeks. It‘s amazing what you have achieved since you bought the farm. Now since you got me hooked on your progress I wonder how your bees are doing. Did you actually ever get any honey? And what about the grapes you harvested in the past two seasons? Did your neighbour Joaquim made wine out of it? Greetings from Germany and a big hello to your wonderful neighbours! Julia
It seems the kind of flies you have are the"moscas do gado", cattle flies. Those are vicious as you have mentioned. They live in places where there is cattle.
whatabout using swales and shalow ponds? there is a guy on youtube, who develops his property in Sicily, that might be interesting for you.
I noticed there is no veggie garden this year?
Hi Ken and Gina, hope the heatwave dissipates soon. Sending love from Madeira from a fellow Western Caper
Please send that heat to Cape Town, i cannot handle this cold..lol

I always wonder where is Gina when she is not on the video!!
Ken, how long did you live in South Africa…?
I understand that in Portugal there is no mosquito problem! and least of all tiger mosquitoes. in short, a paradise
We love your channel and you were an inspiration for us moving to Portugal and starting our own channel. Best thing we ever did!
You used to have a wish list but I can’t find it. Unless that’s on your website? I’ll check that next. We rescued a stray cat and her kittens, and an orphan kitten found us too. We now have 9 cats and a lot more pet expenses than anticipated! 😳 I’m trying to wrap my head around options for people to donate towards their care. I have no idea what I’m doing so if you have any advice or suggestions we would greatly appreciate your help!
Gina, this is a nice comment. 😂
Thanks for the nice video again Ken! Gina I love the hat! You look super cute!
What about buying shade cloth?
Walnut and persimmon and a few other fruit trees do have a 'rest year' every 3rd year or so.
Glad you got plenty of drinking water!
Start planting mango trees, they will do well soon. Portugal is quite warm even otherwise.
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love you guys.
Hello my friend, I'm very glad to see you here. My name is Joseph Corraya from Dhaka Bangladesh.I have a lot of experience in farming and I love farming. Can you arrange a farm work permit for me please? I want to go and work in Portugal. Let me know details if possible my dear friend
Time to look into regenerative agriculture and permaculture methods that will help your land hold water better. Churning up your land will absolutely destroy your topsoil over time. I have been seriously considering the move to Portugal but am very concerned about the increasing fire and drought risk. Saffa in Netherlands
Walnut trees are an incredible investment for their wood. Diana Beresford-Kroeger, the British botanist recommends planting them as an investment.
Love your channel Ken. How has the past three years affected the value of your property (and similar properties)? Enjoy and greetings from NZ!
Hi Ken, pausing at 9 minutes, it is quite simple to set up an irrigation system for your beautiful grape orchard. Living in Nevada everything is irrigated if you want lawn, side gardens, etc. Run small tube, and only add spout attachments to each plant.ok editing after watching rest of video about drought tolerance. But then again with the years of no rain, it would not hurt to add a bit of moisture to stop raisins! Also it takes a few years to show the immediate slow death of trees.
It's interesting to think of a "drought" when the water table is just 25ft deep. Occasionally we hear about wells drying up here in Norther California and many wells are 200ft deep or more.
Consider an evaporative cooler for when the humidity is below 50%. It's upper 80's outside right now and inside the house it's 70. As long as the humidity isn't too high, they work very well, plus it only pulls 200-300w depending on the setting, way less than an A/C. Ours is a Bonaire 5900.
Celsius, not Celcius. 😉
Temperatures around 30-35°c are kind of usual in the area, in the summer. But the drought is exceptionnal. Still, you are doing quite well : your trees look fine. Le'ts hope a bit of rain, all over Europe.
Nice to see you both and see you are fine. Miss the 🐶 & 🐱
