Sorry has to follow up with a second comment
Currently it takes 15 seconds to waive your passport at an uninterested guard
The quickest you can do the American thing is two minutes-take a fingerprint scan and eye scan – often the eye scan has to be done three times
So 8 times longer!
The queues at Malaga are bad enough now
I agree it is not sinister but I do think you are wrong to underplay this
It is going to cause chaos
It puts a lot of people off going to Florida
Nine hour flight then hour queue to get through passport
I am not a troll but I fear for the grief you are going to get underplaying this as I know from my many Florida trips this is bad news
This is a nightmare
Sorry you are completely wrong!!!!
I go to the USA a lot and this is a nightmare causes massive queues
I agree with 90 percent what you say but sorry you are so wrong on this one
It will cause crazy airport delays
You cannot get the hang of it!
It takes a least two minutes each
I know what I am talking about as I go to USA a lot
I never thought this was coming into eu
I go to Spain a lot and the queues at Malaga can be bad but this is going to quadruple them
And the cherry on top : this was voted for by the UK when it still was in the EU….
The UK wanted to stop freedome of movement and it works both way's , so what's the problem ? They voted for it .
What I would say though from the perspective of an EU national is that they should have a separate queue for UK and other third country nationals. As an EU national I shouldn't have to wait in a long queue full of brits needing their fingerprints taken
First time I read about ETIAS must have been 5 years ago, long before Brexit happened. What do brexiteers expect when becoming a third state?
At least they won't deport me to Rwanda.
True, but it's not very friendly and even in the EU there is not really free movement. We could still only stay for 6 months In a year. How was that freedom of movement ? Restrictions on working/ running a business fair enough, but just living there paying taxes etc any restriction is a nonsense and contary to EU and UK interests. Practical measures like insisting you have medical insurance fair enough. But none of the current rules or incoming rules have any practical sense.
It’s only scary if your travels are narrow. I have had to do this 100’s of times around the world.
The people talking about it should have a look at the border between Turkey and Bulgaria. This is the way it has been like for ages overthere. Don't expect it will get better any time soon.
The irony is that the proposal came from an EU committee chaired by an English MEP and was supported by Britain when it was proposed 😆
On a flight from Schipol to Chicago all non US passenger were routed into a tunnel with no airco and no oxygen were stuck there for 6 hours people were passing out with out medical help – I missed my connection flight by 3 hours
On another flight from Las Vegas to Chicago I arrived 5 hours before departure – and again missed my flight by 4 hours due to security checks – in US you get no compensation – no hotel or food but my luggage was on the flight to Chicago so I had no clothes either
So yes it does happen in America
I do believe that people who voted for Brexit should be permanently banned from entering the EU – that is what they voted for – so they can have no complaints
It would also solve the queues at airports
But what about those of us who live permanently in the EU with a UK passport ?
I hope the BBC will be following this up
Folkestone John, not Felixstowe. The latter is a container port. I'm not sure having said Folkestone whether any cross Channel ferries still use this port.
It is what it is. Unfortunately these people who voted us to leave Europe, didn't fully understand the full implications of it. Are we going to be better off. I dont think so. But now we have to live with it.
Surely we know by now it’s the medias job to scaremonger.
yet another media scare story.
Spain don't have to pay the TV licence 🤣😉
Is it just UK folks that this is applied to or will Yanks hav to go through it too… Canadians.. Aussies etc; If it gets too annoying for 'us' going to Europe then less folks will go and that'll hit them in their pockets, so we'll see what happens if we ever get to that situation.
The Express is part of the Fairytales For The Brain-dead triple play that controls British voters and tells them how to think.
Dear old Brexit – the 'gift' that keeps on giving! Well folks, 51% of you idiots voted for it, so now you have to put up with the consequences. Just a shame that the rest of us have to suck it up too. But, really, it's no big deal. I am sick and tired of right-wing UK media outlets spreading scare stories.
I think having your photo and finger prints taken is sinister but it's definitely normal.
Thought was in Nov 23 hello they no about but now
Wtf it's only 7 euro for 3 yrs
What about UK passport holders with residency in EU.
They don't know how to work this now god help them when a rule changes.
And can't compare with the crappy system USA has that's another story, it's a brutal system.
But Brexiteers knew what they voted for….To stop freedom of movement…..
Also. " Since the UK left the EU." As though it is only applying to the UK and no other countries !
Written by a pissed off remoaner, this sort of thing never bothered me going to the states, but if you want to come stay in Blighty, just arrive on a dinghy with no documents and you get a free 5 star hotel, meals and free cash.
The EU seem determined to destroy their own tourism industry. Why would Brits risk £1,000's on booking an advanced holiday if they don't even know if they will be allowed entry a few days before the flight? The checks include criminal, employment and medical infomation that may exclude many people. And it also suggests that the Republic of Ireland can never join Schengen.
Well done for challenging the papers on this and other things! I think the main reasons for these headlines is one; there are very few "brexit benefit" stories. And Two; they want to keep up this idea that its Europe working against Us in particular. Divide and rule using smoke and mirrors. Classic brexit strategy. Welcome to the brexit, sir hahahahahahahahahahaha
If it hadn't been for the idiots who write for these papers Brexit wouldn't have happened and we wouldn't have had these checks when travelling in the EU.
Well said..Thanks for sharing.
find it strange that the eu now want borders but before brexit borders were open even to non eu countries !!!!
We aren't in Europe so the rules changed… Simple
Having applied for an ETA for Canada and an ESTA for the USA today, as a third country passport holder, you have to apply by the rules and complete the forms. The same will soon apply for travel to Europe. The papers just sensationalise the situation, and try to make things worse than they are.
Welcome to Brexit!
The same happens if you want to become a resident in the EU 27. I had an interview, photo taken, finger prints, criminal record check, income check, medical insurance check, The only thing I did not have to do was bend over. If you want to go somewhere and live outside your country of birth then it's only fair they check you out.
Dover and Felixstowe are going to be awful for the first few weeks of next summer
Right wing papers misreporting and blaming the EU. The purveyors of Brexit just can’t admit they made a huge miscalculation.
That is good for illegal migrants too?
Your head can go blue explaining to people that this has always been the case and that when a Brit goes to any country in the world including the USA, Australia, Morocco, Turkey, etc., to name a few it is going to be the same treatment. I’d argue that some countries like the USA, and depending on the airport, getting through can be a nightmare.
Bottom line is that you are dealing with deeply entitled people that can’t see or accept that Brexit works both ways. And that also will answer your question about why the tabloid press keeps coming with these headlines. They know exactly their readers and thus they know exactly how to hijack their dopamine-drained brains appealing to their sense of entitlement. Simples
I'm over 70 so won't need visa
I notice that there appear to be no plans to introduce this for those coming into the UK. Maybe this should be trialled on those arriving on our shores by dinghy in the first instance.
I think the finger prints and photos might be able to be done on your phone as that's how you get the ETIAS approval. Though I'm not 100% sure.
