  1. Originally the money taken out of a persons check each month for their pension should have gone into some government investment fund, and would have been making money to pay for that person's pension many years later. So, if things went to plan, nobody would be paying for older people's pensions.

  2. Stu, in another video you asked about the subsidy for buying solar panels on your home in Spain. We are adding solar panels to our house in Casas de Benitez, Cuenca, and we were told in the quotation that the EU would subsidize about half of the total cost of the system.

We also have solar in our house in the US and the deal here is much better because it actually reduces total cost, while in the US it is a tax credit and if you don't have a big tax bill it is basically useless. Also, we found that the labor cost of installation is much lower in the USA. We are getting a 16 panel system for around 8K euros (4K after subsidy) and we paid around 17K USD for a smaller system in the US two years ago.

The negative aspect is that you have to wait for it and it is NOT GUARANTEED. Having said that, everyone in our pueblo that has asked for it has received it so far but it is dependent on how much is left the European Union pool of money for that purpose. There seems to be a feeding frenzy here for solar installations due to the increase in energy costs.

Regardless, after paying around 30-50 euros for electricity per month for the last 3 years we were taken off our unmetered "construction" electricity this last summer and had a $550 euro bill for the month of July due to air conditioning and pool pump(we think). That makes having solar here a no-brainer, especially after the solar tax has been wisely removed.

  3. I didn't make the live stream on Sunday, but I watched it today and was jolly intrigued by a comment in the chat section from Erika Wallace about the tradition of "Caga Tio"…the pooing uncle. What the bejesus is THAT all about!!

  4. no, you do not have to renounce your American passport. Americans can hold dual citizenship. My husband is American. I am Irish and he holds both Irish and American citizenship and has both passports. The law changed during the Clinton administration. My husband has also renewed both passports several times.

  5. Just out of interest Stu in my neighborhood in new York the Christmas lights on the houses are spectacular. Can I send a video or can I only send pictures. As always keep up the great work.

  6. Sorry but state pensions should start from 60 for both sexes, remembering most people will continue working well past 60 and pay into the system… The money is there to provide this when you consider how much of our money the government wastes on foreign aid etc etc and giving Billions propering up wars etc… Another fact missed is that 20% of males don't reach pension age and die.. Tony cuenca

  7. If you renounce US citizenship, you have to pay an 'exit tax' to the IRS but at least going forward you don't have to fill in a tax return and pay US taxes for the rest of your life. Tina Turner renounced her US citizenship when she chose to become a Swiss citizen a few years ago.

  8. About two decades ago, a Spaniard told me that when Spanish parents wanted their offspring to learn English there were three choices: 1. The wealthy sent their children to the USA. 2. (Generally) The less wealthy sent their children to the UK (usually England) 3. The strict Catholics sent their children to the Republic of Ireland so that they would be in a Catholic country.

  9. My understanding is that turning in your US passport when becoming a Spanish citizen is not the same as renouncing your US citizenship. Renunciation of citizenship is a much bigger deal than turning in your passport. Once renounced, citizenship (at least US) can never be regained. As you said, the customary practice is to just keep one's passport, or turn it in and just get another one from the US embassy.

  10. Adults living with their parents is not only common, it will be 100% more common in the regime known as America. The rent has skyrocketed, this regime stated they wanted to have a multi-generational household throughout the nation.
I heard that Spanish rent is also skyrocketing. So Stew check your privilege before you start shaming those living in a multi-generational household. Research the facts as to why we are witnessing more and more multi-generational households. So you don’t look like a complete moron on this issue plaguing Society in this crazy crony capitalism system.
