Home Immigration Spain update live – Spain gets its way

  1. No disrespect to Spanish speaking but the reason for watching, for me, is to keep up with Spanish politics and day to day life in Spain, as I sadly do not speak Spanish. Spaniards can keep up with news via newspapers and TV. Thanks Stu.

  2. We´ve not seen shortages here in the Casco Historico de Toledo. We keep track of the normal ebb and flow of supply chain and have simply seen the standard flows. For example: Our Unide market gets shipments on certain days and can be out of stock the day before the arrival of the shipment. The next afternoon and everything is back to normal. In the city center most homes are quite small. Tiny, really. So "stocking up" may not be much of an option. The demographic also skews heavily to the "golden years" demo, and they may be less likely to worry about going a few days without, what with their memories of actual hard times taking a bit of the fear element out of the equation Not really sure.

  3. An interesting story regarding summertime hours: The UK experimented with keeping BST one winter in the 60s.
A big story at the time was the death of a young girl walking to school in the dark who was killed crossing a road.

It turns out, some years later that this did not happen; and we thought fake news was a new phenomenon!

  4. Kudos for refusing to go down the path of expressing political opinions. I'm old enough to remember a time when it was quite normal to say "I don't know anything about politics" and that would be the end of the discussion, but after the rise of the internet everybody's become an expert so at best you may hear "I don't LIKE politics". The fact remains that we have a complex society that someone needs to run, preferably in a democratic way, so like it or not, we need politicians to do the dirty work of forming solutions and compromises that are workable even in a world of varied opinions. Nobody needs the American conditions where it's well nigh impossible to get anything done because everybody's screaming bloody murder over principles and ideology. Life is mostly a practical problem that requires sound realism and the acceptance that you can't always get what you want. (Random Rolling Stones reference there, which again betrays my age bracket.)

  5. Stu you’re not as neutral as you think but I don’t care. Your comments on autónomo taxes are conservative, your comments of certain Spanish traditions are liberal – just to name two examples. I guess they balance.

  6. Is your milk in cartons, glass or plastic containers? You can freeze milk if you take a bit out then close tightly of course not if it is stored in glass containers, unless you put it in some other storage container.

  7. Re: Time Zones. I wonder whether you are aware that Spain moved to Central European Time (CET) in 1942. The move was instigated by General Franco to align Spain yet more closely with Nazi Germany. Not a political view. A factual statement.
In 2013, a parliamentary commission, stated that Spain "had been in the wrong timezone for more than 71 years" and for economic and health reasons, recommended a return to Western European Time. Clearly, that recommendation has been ignored.
That explains why it would still be dark at 9:30 am

  8. No foreigner will invest in Spain. Would you believe Caixa Bank froze my account because I don't have a NIE? I'm not a permanent resident of Spain, but I bought a chalet 22 years ago and paid off the mortgage. I've been their client all this time.

  9. Another really interesting live chat. Thank you Stuart for continuing to keep us informed.
Yes please to a Spanish conversation session with Iván when possible – I really enjoyed the last one you both did!

  10. I couldn't watch the live. I could see the chat, but not the video and didn't know what was going on. I thought Stuart hadn't changed the time on the clock and was delayed so I went to Mia's channel to see how she made dumplings. Anyways, perhaps fresh milk is more avaiable here than UHT at this moment.

  11. Good man Stu, stay neutral on the political front. I find it very refreshing that you don't voice a personal opinion. Your daily updates of what is happening in Spain far more useful than your political opinions, please don't change. Bobi from Benitachell
