Spring Garden Tour in Portugal and My Off Grid Work Goals for June 2022

Welcome to my bonus video which is the first in a new series of progress reports!

I’m adding a new video into the mix each month where I go over the previous month’s progress and set goals for the following month. This will be a great way for me to hold myself accountable but it’ll also mean that you can follow along more easily in date order if that’s what you’d prefer. My Friday videos will still be scheduled as usual, but I’ll chuck in an additional video on the first of each month to say hi and keep everyone updated.

This progress report is a bit different because, since it’s the very first one, I didn’t have any goals set for May. I accomplished LOADS of things with my parents while there were here visiting, so I’ll talk about all of that soon in its own video. Instead, for this first progress report I’ll give you a tour of my garden and food forest because a lot has been happening! Then later in the video I’ll share all of my main my goals for June 2022.

I hope you enjoy this new addition! I think it’ll make things seem a bit more organised but I’m new to this whole YouTube thing and puzzling my way through it all, so I’d love feedback not only on the content of the video, but also whether you like this idea or not.

As always, thanks for watching and I’ll see you again in the next video!

  1. Use the wood and clay tiles from that lean to and make a back door portico area to cover and protect your door and you. Some running vine or roses at the portico would be lovely and mint or lavender. And your own plants for teas. Not enough bees to pollinate things. I hear no birds singing. Make a few bird houses and wind chimes for a little noise. Property seems dead on camera.

  2. Your garden is looking great!
One question though: do you have any issues with slugs? I am in southern Germany and every time I mulch with straw it becomes a slug resort 🙁
Probably it is related to the high humidity here (it rains at least once a week) and in your farm the climate is too dry for the slugs to proliferate…

  3. Hello Kirsty
    Goodnight
    Your garden is very interesting.
At 3:05 this plant is called Physalis, it is a tropical fruit but it does very well in Portugal, so much so, that I have a vase inside my house whose plant grew up to 2.5 mts high, it gives a similar fruit with a cherry tomato, very sweet and with many seeds, which reproduce very well, just spread them on the ground.
This plant, currants and raspberries need a lot of water otherwise they dry out quickly, usually they should be watered at the end of the day.
As for the ants, there is a simple process, tie a cloth with cooking oil around the trunk, they are pushed away and no longer climb.
Moreover, fruit trees like a lot of water, they must be watered every day in hot weather, always at dusk, never during the day, this can kill the trees.
This flat peach is called "Paraguayan peach" and it is very sweet, I like it a lot.
    Very good job, congratulations.
    Best regards.

  4. I put used coffee ground in my veg. garden and it looks like the ants do not come and visit. Also when the ant appear in my kitchen put used coffee grounds down and the ants move on.

  5. Hi .. not sure if someone has already mentioned this about ants. The ants are not the problem, it is what they farm. They use your plants to farm aphids (and such like). The aphids suck your plant juices and secrete nectar. The ants use the nectar as food. Not a good situation for your plants. If you want to get rid of the ants use 1 part sugar to 3 parts borax diluted with water. Put in shallow bowl and keep topped up. Within a day you are rid of all the ants feeding off this (for a while. Till new colony establishes). The queen is fed this and kills her as well. Else do as the other person said, diluted peppermint spray.

  6. 🙋hi from Scotland hi Kirsty wow I just love your garden I have an allotment here in Scotland and grow all my own veggies I would look into the ants in the trees just in case it will damage the fruit trees can't wait to see how you get on making a lovly home and garden you have done amazing take care cheers 🍷 Anne

  7. Hello from Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories, Canada. I really enjoy your sense of humor. Portugal looks great. As much as I enjoy gardens, I'm looking forward to the building videos. Cheers!

  8. There is no need to trellises the cucumbers, they can grow perfectly well as runners. The fruit trees are doing great, just water them regularly. You are doing a fabulous job, the quinta is looking great!

  9. I think you are doing a great job as you do the vlogs right now don't change it please those other vlogs are very commercial i like simple as you do it, keep it up 🇵🇹👍🎬😋🌞🌡

  10. I don’t know if ants cause your fruit any issues but you can spray the tree with diluted peppermint essential oil which the ants don’t like much and they go elsewhere. Tho that might be the next plant!

  11. The flat peaches are PESSEGOS DO PARAGUAY. I don't know if they are really originally from there but i do know that if they are usually especially delicious so hopefully you have a good plant there.
I was going to comment on your last vid but didn't have time and since you mentioned the tool shed i will go ahead on this one.
If i were you, and i wish I was but am still stuck in the city for another year or two, i would buy a ready made shed. I don't know how your finances are but I do know that the cost of lumber is at a record high right now and like you said hard to source. So you will spend a lot of time getting everything together and then like you said "probably take forever" to get it built. Meanwhile your lovely creepy barn stays creepy. Time is also money! For less then 300eur you can get a biggish prefab metal shed you can put up rather quickly. You will still have plenty to do to organize some shelving and work tops and stuff. That way you could start much sooner working on your actual house. Lovingly designing and sourcing and building without the frustration and energy consuming hump of building a place just to store the equipment and make space to build inside your house. Time is money. Don't forget the coma inducing hot summer is apon us wich will probably induce a fair bit of procrastination. So if your lucky you might get it done by fall…
When your done with the house you can always take down the shed and maybe even sell it and build yourself a proper workshop with the experience of knowing what you really need for a good work space.
You could at least check out your options , i found some interesting models that are alot (by really a lot) less expensive than in the big shops on a site called estufas.pt – they deliver! Or check out your local options or 2nd hand on olx.
    I speak from experience.
Anyway good luck, i can't wait to see what comes next !

  12. Hi, when you first plant a bed of asparagus you have to be very patient as it takes three year before you should harvest your first picking, from then on in you will have a harvest for the next 30 years year on year, and by the way if you let asparagus go to seed it makes really nice flower decoration.

  13. We used to have an old bathroom before we renovated, I painted the door with blackboard paint and had a "To do" and a "To buy" list on this blackboard door it was great I couldnt hide it or avoid it..lol so everthing went on that board shopping lists, bills to pay, ideas dreams and thoughts of the day,Chalk is cheap to buy and easy to rub out and I used to get a great sense of achievement as I'd accomplish tasks and then put a line through them a great reminder of how much I got done without realising it maybe you could do something similar on the back of your metal front door as we live in a very small house too although not quite as small and as cute as yours, I am loving your garden and its progress and love your garden tours Cheers Jo

  14. You are doing a great job! Farming/gardening is a job and requires project management. Whatever project management method works for you will bring you success. Lists are great, working out priorities, setting up daily/weekly/annual chores, etc. While it is necessary to also build in relaxation/socializing, the problem is that Mother Nature waits for no one and forces a schedule on the farmer.
Ants on your plants are a symptom. Spraying your trees with soapy water will discourage the pests that affect your trees, like other comments indicate.
As you indicated in earlier videos, you have to create income streams. YouTube may help. Do you want to make videos of your life building or do you want to build your life while also video recording? Which part is important? Some YouTubers spend more effort and money on setting up shots/editing/ equipment than on the original job.

  15. Don't cut back the asparagus fronds because they will be helping produce food for the crown so that it will produce more asparagus next spring. I wait until the fronds go straw brown in autumn/winter then chop them off and cut them up as extra mulch over the crowns.

Ants climbing over trees can mean that they are carrying sap sucking insects to the trees; as ants and some sap suckers can have a symbiotic relationship. The ants transport and protect and the sap suckers give them food in return. Check for scale, mealy bug etc.

You are doing great and I hope you are feeling accomplished. I for one think you should. 🙂
