The Birthplace of Portugal: Guimaraes, Portugal [4k Portugal Travel Vlog]

Guimaraes (Guimarães) is a beautiful smaller city not far from Porto and Braga. This town is known as the “birthplace of Portugal,” and is an Unesco World Heritage city!

DON’T MISS ANY OF OUR PORTUGAL VIDEOS:

Guimaraes, Portugal has two major attractions and many others. Standing atop the hill are the castle and Duke’s Palace, overlooking all of Guimaraes. The castle’s ruins can be entered by purchasing a combo ticket at the Palace (but you can enter either attraction first). The Castle of Guimaraes doesn’t take long to go through and is entirely outdoors, so plan your entrance according to the weather.

The Palace of the Dukes of Braganza (PAÇO DOS DUQUES DE BRAGANÇA) was built by the first Duke of Braganza, an illegitimate son of the king, and was constructed in the early 1400s. The interior of the palace has been carefully restored and is uniquely beautiful. It’s decorated with period pieces and also some significant tapestries by well known artist Nuno Gonçalves.

The Convento de Santo António dos Capuchos offers a really cool surprise! If you’re willing to climb some extremely steep and narrow stairs, you wind up at the top of a patio where the bell tower sits (note there are no railings to keep small children from falling). The view alone is worth the modest entry fee!

We also had the most *amazing* vegetarian lunch, at this place: Cor de Tangerina:

  2. Hi there. That was a good video. However, I would like to draw your attention to the foundation date of the Castle of Guimarães (minute 5:11). it was first built in the 900s (the tenth century, as it is clearly indicated by the Roman numeral "X", on the text by the entrance) and not in the 1000s.
You might also like to know that the name "Guimarães" comes from the founder of the County of Portucale (the county that is linked to the foundation of Portugal), Vimara Peres. Guimarães' inhabitants are called "Vimaranes" for that very reason.
Here's some further reading on the matter:
