The First Viewing – What Our House Looked Like When We Bought

In the final part of our buying a house in Portugal series we’ll show you the first time we viewed the house we ultimately ended up buying. In it’s raw form – almost unedited – we’ll show you exactly what we saw in mid-September, two years ago.

We’ll also give you a sneak peek inside the roof space to show you something special and wrap things up with some final thoughts on the buying property in Portugal experience.

  1. I came on board after you bought this place. Very interesting to see the before.
Im fascinated by what has happened since you actually found out what a project you had ahead of you.
I thought you might get upstairs into working order before you started on the ground floor. Not to be…
I love seeing your process and your progress. However you decide to attack the project.❤️
    Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺

  2. What a huge difference you’ve made from when you first saw your now home. It must be so satisfying to see how far you’ve come. It was interesting to hear all of your plans when you first viewed it to what your plans are now. How things evolve right? Well done you two. Looking forward to seeing all of your future improvements.

  3. Is Tom an Aussie or Kiwi? Unusual to hear the “twang” in a place like Portugal. You are the only other Aussie (and Queenslander!!!) I have heard in Pt. He seemed down to earth and honest which is reassuring.

  4. What an incredible amount you have managed and learned in such a short time. I am glad "enjoying life" is still on your 'to do' list. Can I add a bit a of aged wisdom….the more storage space you have; the more 'tripe' builds up. That attic space….is tremendous. Good luck with it all. xxx

  5. I was like yes yes this is beautiful you can fix this up flatter land is better as you get older too.Once everything is in place it will be so enjoyable ok your garden is going to be work but it’s fun isn’t it?.❤️🦘🐨

  6. Just curious, but did most of the properties you saw have furniture throughout? I noticed how much furniture was left behind and wondered if this is how properties are put on the market.
I am one of those people who enjoy using various things with good craftsmanship. That one wardrobe with the highly finished doors was amazing.
The roof construction on this house is obviously done with craftsmanship and traditions along with higher quality build. It's both extremely functional and beautiful. 😃

  7. 4 hectares is 9.88 acres, a big chunk of land. Rule of thumb is 4,000 sq/ft of garden per person per year. (371.6 sq/meters) So you should be able to grow enough food for both of you to eat during summer and fall, and put away for winter and spring from an 80×100' garden. (743 sq/meters)

  8. Congratulations in picking the property that is right for you. I have been where you are ….on Vancouver Island Canada. Temptation is all about to go big but we can be very happy with beautiful vs big. You house is charming!

  9. We had Tom Jennings do a survey on our house. I never got chance to meet him as we got stuck in Lisbon so it was nice to put a face to the voice. Can see why you bought that place though, definitely the best of the ones you showed us 👍

  10. It’s amazing how nice the homes conditions looks in the video. Wise to have an inspector look over the home. A small tractor with a few implements will save you tons of work on the land and more importantly time! I really love those arbor’s or concrete frames that are for grapes or some kind of vines. I would need to hire out most of the work if I were to take on a refurbishment of a home or farm. I’m not physically able to do what your doing at the pace your planning but my mind is racing. Still have my imagination hahaha.
Do either or both of you speak Portuguese? That’s another issue for me .

  11. I think that the threshing circle would make a lovely craft room/workshop once you have moved into the house. Unless you build a circular greenhouse, but do you really want a greenhouse. I can see why you bought it, who wouldn't buy that house, so much protentional. It oozes character and with the work that you have done you have more than likely doubled its value. You have answered so many questions with just this video. You have to ask though is the effort worth it and before you answer, I say yes without any doubt. You were meant for this house and this house was meant for you. Thanks for posting

  12. You could open up for like 2-4 people at a time to come and see what you are doing in person, learn from y'all, and help you with the work. As long as they cover their own costs at a minimum it would help you. You could even do like 200-400 euro on top for the training you give.

Just an idea to help y'all get the job done.

Another one is to work with people in the community to do some of the research, design, and planning on projects for you. Then you two review what was delivered like Master planners. That could save you a lot of time as well, so more time is actually doing the projects
