Tour of My Off Grid Water Systems on My Homestead in Central Portugal

In this video I’ll taking you on a tour around my land – from my gloomy shower drain to my 1,000 liter IBC tanks to my leaky cisterna to my overgrown well – and show you how I capture, pump, store, and use water on my little piece of land in Central Portugal.

Water is the most important thing to look for when you’re buying a piece of property and figuring out how to make this resource work for you will be key to almost everything else you do. I’ve been working hard on designing good water systems, and I think I’ve finally got something that works well so I’m excited to show you around! There’s still lots more to do to improve things, but I’m getting there, little by little. Plus, follow along as I finally attempt to set up irrigation to my food forest terrace… a job I’ve been avoiding for about six months!

We’re in the midst of a heatwave here in Central Portugal and this video was a struggle to make because I managed to give myself heatstroke AND I also somehow caught a cold as well! I’m struggling to stay cool while also trying to get healthy but I pulled things together to make this latest video and I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks for watching and, if you like what you see, please do hit ‘like’, leave a comment, and share it around.

  4. Another interesting video. Smart thinking that you worked on priority things like the irrigation. It can always be improved when it's not so hot. What is your next priority?

I too live in an arid climate, in California. I can hide out in my house midday to beat the heat. I hope you are able to get the holes in your house plugged up with something at least temporarily, some with rocks & dirt or mortar, some with old clothes or insulation, maybe some with spray foam. Hopefully, you will be ok in Aug. For us it is also hot & dry until Oct, & our worst wildfires are at the end of Sept & Oct.

You sound like I did when I had Covid. I'm glad you're getting better!

  5. Sorry you feeling poorly, great watching the piping of the water system, had no idea how many attachments go into it, but do like the tap system as you can control water to different areas. Get well soon.😉🌱

  6. Take care of your self /Thermoplexia is a dangerous situation that can lead to death /Ware pareos and put wet handkerchiefs on your head/ware swim suit and pareo and make small showers during the day to keep your clothes and body wet..Work on the field 6-12 and after 7 in the evenning .In the midday close your self in to the ruin /do your internet work/cook and sleep.Follow the way of living of Africans ,Mexicans -make Siesta .Follow nature .ciao..

  7. I work in the garden when it’s late evening even when it’s dark I use my bright light to see what I’m doing I hope and wish you well and a lovely job you’ve done you’re doing so so well take care now

  8. Oh I do Hope your head cold is improving being ill as a solo land owner can be quite difficult though having Mickey for company may be comforting.
I hope you are so proud of yourself, I look at all you have accomplished in your lovely home and land in such a short time period.
It can be so frustrating when not getting a part that you need and want to finish a project but have to travel a fair distance to get , so I was so happy for you that the tap fitting was in the bag!
I know when I am ill (thankfully rarely) Just ensuring I meet my dogs and chooks needs can be so draining.

I really enjoy your honest approach to sharing on your videos as it gives me courage to try to do much more for myself. Thank you so much.
Oh and I am always perplexed by people wearing baseball caps hats in full sun. Here in Australia most farmers and people who work outside in our hot summers wear full brimmed hats which helps keep the sun of you neck (an area that is tender to sunburn). Do you not have any biting or stinging bugs reptiles in Portugal, I am floored when I see you walking through the high mint and all I think of is the snakes who may be lying in the cooler maybe damp area..

  9. Love how you said; I want the rain water to cascade 🤣 down 💧
I do know that that will happen sometimes but you talking about it being the beginning of a probably very hot 🥵 summer is funny.
Please stuff all those open pipes with something, you don’t want some creepy crawler to come in that way or up an die in the pipe 🕷

  10. Hi from Bulgaria, you are one or two steps ahead on the water system, I am planning to buy 10 tanks , not just for irrigation but I want to do a backyard catfish set up with a pond. So the parallel universe continues…….it was very hot here but cooled this week, but forecast back up to high 30's this week, I go for river safaris very refreshing just walk up the rivers.I also damp down the floors and flyscreens, makes a difference, try hosing the shade cloth

  11. Please put the ads at the end, you've put too much interrupting the video! I have a limited access to internet, plus it's very weak, when an ads interrupt the video, the whole thing stops, it's so frustrating and just makes me stop watching, please. At the end one can leave it runs for a while. Thanks.

  12. yeah gotta be careful with the heat, up early, do work then until it gets too hot and then again late in the evening (sleep mid day) thats what I did when I worked in Texas and temps were 40+ C

ps. overflow needs to be the same or larger size than inflow 😉 else yes, then it pops out the top 😀 so you had the right idea, it just need a slight adjustment 😀 you got this
