Hey Expats and Travelers! It’s Josh and Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere here! Today we’re visiting a city in the North of Portugal – Viana do Castelo. It is a Portuguese city with cool weather, is close to the Spanish border, and is along the Atlantic coast. We’ll show you Viana do Castelo’s historic center and some other attractions. We’ll also talk about housing prices, public transportation, a variety of restaurants, job opportunities, and more. Watch this Viana do Castelo guide and vlog to find out if we could live here. If you’re planning to move to and live in Portugal but want something smaller than Lisbon or Porto, you should definitely consider this city!

Why wife and I are looking at moving to Portugal and opening a small albergue for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. This got us very interested in Viana do Catelo. Thanks Josh & Kalie, your videos are so helpful
Thanks very useful
We just visited last month and thought it was fantastic. It might be a little out there in the way you said of more going on in Porto. We were talking about how it would be such a lovely place to have a summer home ( if a person were to be so lucky)
Lovely video. I do relate to your videos even though the someitmes focus more on the audience which are younger parents. I'm a reitred 66 y/o gay man who also hapens to have children with a female friend. Mine turn 22 and 19 tyis year. I would love to be pointed toward any Vloggers who covesr Portugal for the LGBQIA community. I'm not sure there is one. Surely not a male one.
I’m not looking to move anytime soon but I still watch your videos because your personalities are refreshing! Keep up the good work. 👍🏽
You guys should visit Esposende, Ofir, Fao and Apulia.
Quick question:
Braga or Viana do Castelo?
😉
I have been leaning to Viana for a long time as we want a slower and smaller town for retirement. Living in the mid-Atlantic states we are used to rain and prefer to have it- and it’s warmer in Viana in the winter and more comfortable during the summer than our city. There are buses to Ponte de Lima, Etc, and train routes to Braga, Guimaraes, and Porto- and to Spain. I am leaning to Ponta Delgada, and Viana. The plus for Ponta Delgada is the water is 10 degrees warmer than mainland Portugal! Thank you for the great videos.
Thanks!
I'm currently living in Florida and just bought a condo in Viana do Castelo last month. The condo is about 10 minutes away south from the city center by Amorosa Beach. My plan is to move there in about 10 or 11 years. Thanks for the video guys! Keep up the good work!
My husband and I love watching Kalie and Josh’s channel as it’s informative. We will be visiting PT next year with our kids to explore and embrace its culture and history. We find their channel so informative.
How far from Spain would you say it is? Do the trees change colors like fall colors?
Have you done one on Villa do Conde/Figuera da Foz? Would you xpat there! Would be very helpful to know. Congrats!
Nice 👍🙂
Aren't you worried that you're inflating the prices for the local community. Countries are getting tired of Americans and gentrification
Great info 😊
That festival in August is one of the biggest in Portugal. They "paint" the roads with salt art.
Another northern place to consider. You're making me excited to schedule my first scouting trip.
Thank you for covering that area and all of the elements of livability that you took into consideration. Very helpful information!
Great video!
GREAT VIDEO…. You NEED to do a PONTE DE LIMA Video….. A must…..
Viana is a nice, relatively quiet city with all the things you need. I was going to mention the train is easy from there to Porto or even up into Spain (Vigo at least).
I heard,"Beware for those of you who do not like cool weather," and my ears immediately perked. My favorite weather is overcast, mid-60s. Also, I love being near a large body of water, but I'm NOT a "soak up the sun on the beach" guy. (I live in Seattle, and not far from the waterfront. The weather is usually lovely. However, I believe I'm due for a change of scenery.)
I've been thinking to try living in Portugal, but I've been a little concerned about it getting too warm for me. (Not a health thing: just that warm weather–mid-80s and up–tends to dampen my spirits.) Yet it sounds as though there are places in the north where it might actually be doable for me. E eu estou aprendido portugues. … OK, I got that wrong. Eu estou aprendendo português. E vou viajar a Lisboâ esta semana. Porto na próxima semana.
Viana Do Castelo is one of the places I was considering! Thank you so much for covering this area. All the details you include is so pivotal in the decision making process. Very informative as usual. You guys rock! Thank you 😊!!!
Very informative. Also, Josh is gonna need bigger shirts! 💪😉
Nice place … thanks!
Great job with this video, lots of good footage and informative discussion. VDC is so pretty, and a ton of open green space (not to mention one of my favorites beaches). 🙂
Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
Do you suggest bargaining for real estate?
That was a great video. The information was very helpful
I loved my rest day in Viana do Castelo when I was walking the Camino de Santiago out of Portugal. It was the only rainy day on my walk. I'm looking forward to visiting again.
Very close to Viana there’s a big spot for Kite Surfing.
Not sure you know, but this part of the coast, all the way to Póvoa de Varzim is very popular for summer vacations for Portuguese, so it’s very local.
Also the wealthiest families (specially older and traditional) all have their beach homes close by Viana and Esposende.
Love that city. (And the bolas de Berlim from Natário!)
For my wife Sara, the colder and rainier the better. This is a point where we have divergent preferences—and why if we retire to Portugal it will be in the north….
Its a nice place. But even in the summer pack a windbreaker or light coat if the wind is blowing in from the sea. But 20 minutes drive into the interior will feel like a different climate, much warmer.
Kalie and Josh,
Thanks so very much for all of your informative videos. I was just approved on Thursday for my D7 visa I'm now waiting for the embassy send my passport back to me with my visa. Thanks so much I can't wait to meet you both at a meet up. Keep up the
great work you're helping many individuals.
People indicative of the North of Portugal! Totally agree as a Northern person living in Porto. You feel our particular touch! 🎉😊
Kalie you are the more beautiful expat showing the Portugal cities. Prosit!❤
Viana do Castelo will definitely be on our list of places to visit! 👍❣
We are about to celebrate 4 months of living in a tiny village near Mastrinho, about 25 minutes from Águeda…
Yesterday, we spent all day in Porto. Ended our day by shopping at the big Continente on the outskirts of town. Everytime we drive up to Porto, we think of you all. Hopefully someday we can finally enjoy a meal together, seems like we still owe you one! 😉🙃😁
Thanks for this excellent & informative video! Hope your weekend is superb! ❣
Another very informative video! Sounds like a place for the older folks! Always enjoy your perspective on the different locations you visit.
Perfect weather!!!!🤗
