WE almost GOT THE DOOR IN. – Portuguese House Renovation

We are in the middle of renovating our house in an abandoned Portuguese village. Today me and Duarte are continuing with the mini rebuild. We try to put the door in, but that turns out to be more work then expected. Also we need to still cut back Benjamin, as one of my close friends suggested. ALSO we find out the real name of Piloto. Next episode we… surprise you.

My name is Jasper and i bought a house in a Portuguese ghost town. Together with my dogs Zoey & Akira we show you the rebuild of our house en what it is like living the daily life in Central Portugal.

  1. A week and a half ago I had some new thermal aluminum frame double glass windows installed here in central Portugal. Our walls are granite stone, the the professionals used Würth silicone in the big gaps and small gaps. Supposed to last 30 years. It is a much better product than the hardware store silicone or acrylic blend caulk.

  2. Silicone for small gaps also helps with waterproofing, as you will have contraction and expansion due to weather, we used silicone when putting in our window panes as well, I see the glass comes prefitted, in our country it is not like that. You can also use foam on big gaps, but cement is probably more suitable long term for that climate, we have wooden frames attached to cement that forms the frame, we do not attach the door straight to the cement 💜, Toby will always be Piloto to me🤣

  3. Jasper, around the large gaps in the window and door installation, I would use expanding foam rather than cement (that will be more flexible than rigid cement). Re getting the frames square. you need shims, don't concern yourself with the opening at this point a functioning door or window is more important. The correct Shims for your window and door frames should be at that same store you brought the windows at. Simply install the frames straight and square, then fill with foam and silicone and if needed plaster post to get the look you are after. I hope that helps, D

  4. Fitting a door and pruning a tree is surprisingly similar in one way–it's hard to know just where to stop!
The olive tree would probably benefit from building a swale around it to capture whatever run-off comes from the terraced area. Once the tree is established, you can decide whether to keep it or dig it away.

  5. THE WORD IS 'SUCKERS' – THOSE ARE THE STEMS OR LIMBS THAT SHOOT OUT OF A TREE, WHETHER IT'S CHERRY OR OLIVE OR OTHER KIND…THOSE HAVE TO ALWAYS BE REMOVED IN ORDER TO GET GOOD PRODUCTION FROM YOUR TREE…;)
