We finished the greenhouse! – Renovation (part 2)

This week we continue on our greenhouse renovation project. Starting with making the side look better, adding a frame with a window for air circulation in summer. Then I get to setting out the beds, adding in compost and finally planting out the first tomatoes of this season. We’re very excited to see how this extend our growing season here in the Castelo Branco district of Portugal.

New here? My name is Lea and I live with my partner Maarten, our toddler Puck and baby Bo on our land in Central Portugal. We left the rat race in the Netherlands in 2018 and moved south in our old campervan. Two years ago we bought land in Portugal that had been abandoned for several decades. After lots of hard work we now live in a beautiful yurt and keep ourselves busy growing our own vegetables as well as producing olive oil, wine and honey on a small scale. This channel documents all the different jobs we have to do, and sometimes some nice footage of this beautiful country we now call home.

  1. Leah another way to make sweet potatoe slips is take a sweet potatoe and prick the potatoe half way up and insert three toothpicks around the sweet potatoe as you do an avocado pip and put water in a jar and rest half of the sweet potatoe in the water and the potatoe will rest on the tooth picks above the jar and you will see slips grow here is a link https://youtu.be/WVcsY6v8HsE Your green house is coming on nicely. Glad Maarten could fix it up for you. Have a nice day.

  2. Have you thought about planting a green manure crop in your vegetable garden some time before your main crop planting? It helps to suppress weeds and you can dig it in to feed your soil, or use as a mulch. You’d have to check local conditions, of course, for the best fast-growing plants to use for this purpose. May be too late for this season though.

  3. I grew kumera for the first time this summer in NZ because my mother found 2 kumera that had sprouted in the back of her vege bin. I just put them in the soil and they grew. I decided to sprout another one and put it in the top of a jar with the bottom of it in the water. It sprouted very well. So maybe they need to be in contact with water or covered in damp soil. Will be interesting to see how your ones do with your method. Great greenhouse too.

  4. Commendations to Marten for using scraps of this and that from everything! Waste not, want not. Whenever I want to start a project I first inventory my shed to see what I already have on hand. Leah your tomatoes will love the heat!

  5. Your both doing a good job, don't get discouraged, make do with what you have for now…and yes we could hear the buzzing of the bees..lol…and no we haven't got the aroma videos yet….lol..take care

  6. Hi guys , the Polly tunnel looks great. Hope you have a successful harvest. Can i ask if you had any problems with rodents robbing your seed potatoes? I was trying growing them in straw the no dig method but most of them have disappeared .

  7. Lea are you and Martin put a lot of work into the greenhouse it looks great , I was wondering if you think if you show puck how to plant maybe three plants and then let her do the rest on her own she could help you plant a lot in the greenhouse that would save you a lot of time and she probably enjoyed immensely , keep your spirits high are you doing a great job I love to watch your videos thank you !!! 👍👍🥰🥰🪴🪴

  8. Nice job on the greenhouse Leah and maartin ..your tomato plant seedlings look great ! My tomato seedlings are doing pretty good, cucumbers not bad either , I still have them under my grow light but they may need to be put in separate pots now..do you fertilize your seedlings? I used fish fertilizer, its supposed to be real good for them..btw, as an idea, you could lay wood chips in the paths on top of the cardboard …im loving the garden/greenhouse videos as it's time to get the work done now. I like to smoke a bowl, 🤭 drink coffee and spend hrs doing garden work,..lol.. I may even clean out my shed today as it's nice out..any q&a coming up? Also how is the pond coming along? Take care, im looking forward to your next video, sure wish you did 2/week but I understand the effort it takes must be alot! Cheers🙂✌️

  9. 🤣 I know dutch is totally different from German. But:“ Ich kann nicht rechnen“ I understood perfectly because I have also said this many times before. The greenhouse looks great!

  10. You are doing such good work in garden that too with 2 children. Bravo 👏🏼. Plant cucumber on the side you get more sun and grow them vertically that will help shade and cool the green house

  11. Thank you for a lovely Sunday morning video. You really are an inspiration for people who don't have a lot of money (the majority) but have a lot of heart and willingness to live a different and truly rich life.

  12. You can always put that shade net over the greenhouse to cool it down in the summer. Enjoy your progress. You have accomplished a lot. All the very best.

  15. Your drill seemed to be slipping a lot.Remember if you use phillips screws use a phillips bit ,the same for pozidriv.Always use a bit a little smaller than the screw for best results.

  16. My other way of operating is that of a true optimist. Many would think it is being pessimistic. Think of the worst possible things that can go wrong. If they don't happen then you have had a very productive day.
