There’s been an interesting convergence of demographic articles recently in Portugal’s English-speaking press, especially the Portugal News. On this show, as Gilda takes a break from the Visa update until 2022, consider these statistics…

“…the country increased the number of ex-pats, who now represent 5.4 percent of the total population in the country, increasing by 40.6 percent compared to 2011” – 40% more foreigners in Portugal –

“About half of the population residing in Portugal is concentrated in just 31 municipalities, mostly located in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto.” – Portuguese moving from country to coast –

“…immigrants show that they have a greater capacity to contribute than nationals, as they have 64 contributors for every one hundred residents, against 45 Portuguese taxpayers for every one hundred residents.” – Immigrants contributed over €1 billion –

“The number of people aged 65 and over has increased by 20.6% in the last 10 years and now represents 23.4% of the Portuguese population,” – Elderly population up 20% –

“We don’t just have to be further ahead than Spain. We even have to be further ahead than the other Member States of the European Union.” – Portugal aiming for top 10 in EU –
