***PLEASE NOTE*** The opinions shared in this video are mine alone. I am not putting blame on any particular person, business or entity. I am merely pointing out some of the known causes of aquatic life poisoning in large bodies of water.
Dead fish and birds are washing up on the shores of our local lake, the Barragem de Marateca. I went around the lake to investigate and try and get to the bottom of what’s causing it. This lake is the drinking water for the Castelo Branco district in Central Portugal so its very important that this water source is protected.
In this video we take a look at the various things that can cause aquatic animals to die, such as low oxygen levels, Blue Green algae, poisons and toxic metals such as copper. We ride around the dam and look at how farming can potentially affect lakes and rivers negatively. 🐟💀☠️
We are Ken & Gina, and we left the UK in 2019 in search of a simpler life, away from our office jobs, and the hustle and bustle of the big city. We sold our house, left the UK, and left the Rat race behind us, to move to Portugal and buy an abandoned farm. We found an amazing farm in Castelo Branco, Central Portugal where we have lived for the last two and a half years. We make these videos for our friends and family to keep up with what’s going on in our new lives and as a record to look back on one day so see how far we have come. We are always amazed when we see how many people have been watching, following, and subscribing to our vlogs. Thanks for tuning in 😊

Yikes… 🌀💚🌀
I also suspect its due to fertilizers forming toxic algae that is suffocating the fish – so sad
ahhhh, pesticides and fertilizers… a double edge knife! Thanks for sharing! Keep us posted!
There are similar algae blooms in the Great Lakes, Lake Winnipeg and other large bodies of water in Canada. Agricultural run-off is part of the issue. Difficult to remedy but important that local officials have a plan and act on it.
Are the fish dying during the early morning then its oxygen depleation – bigger fish are just more exposed to all extreme enviornmental factors
Check for mercury
It also can be a virus : Spring Viraemia of Carp. This is because al death fish are carp….
The authorities don't know what is happening in the dam. The water quality is good, they think that's a biological problem, because only two similar species are afected.
I was looking around and so far they don't know what caused the fish to die, means they know who did it but they are trying to protect, any big factory around? I remember years ago… ok decades ago small streams completely destroyed by some small businesses, animal waste dumped, etc.
Could they pick up the algae? Maybe forcing the farms around to use something that's not dangerous to the environment?
Ask at town hall/municipal offices if that caravan area is for sale, or for that matter any other small area overlooking lake? Thanks. Another great outdoors video.
Such a great watch and to learn from your knowledge, let’s hope the authorities get to the bottom of it and it’s rectified swiftly. Thanks again.
Another great video Ken, love the drone shots❤️
Thanks for the education Ken, I hope the levels can be brought back to normal fairly soon
That isn't a small farm what so ever..
You might be on to something.
But if this farm is part of what is going on will any thing or can any thing be done??
Looks like someone has quit a bit of money.
Then when you think about it the municipalities do know about this farm and has known about it for quit some time.
What could be done if it is revealed.
Will truth be served or hid??
That is the question. Hope it won't be hid and nature comes before money.
Very impressive info Ken. Do you think maybe birds would die from eating contaminated fish?
Organic farms are sustainable., not industrial farms.
The agricultural runoff is killing wildlife. What a shame!
Cool outing and video, Ken. Shame about the Marateca having some toxicity. It's still an impressive body of water in a gorgeous area looking to the Gardunha. Thanks for taking out to some of your fave spots. I'll miss you and Gina paddling on your inflatable board there this summer.
modern agriculture is so wasteful and damaging.
Awesome video thank you for sharing 😁
Pond turnover, possibly? There are several ways to address it if that’s the case.
Absolutely loved this place , so peaceful when we visited. Will be back there in 3 weeks but I guess we won't be swimming in it…so sad to see the fish but Ken , thankyou for your knowledge of the marine biology . 😊 was so beautiful to see the view from the drone shots too.
Ken, This was a real treat to watch such a scenic are, It's unfortunate that fish are dying in the water. Hopefully, the environmental people will find out what's causing it. That you ken for taking us along this wonderful route in your own backyard. Sending you and Gina and your family of dogs a Happy Mother's Day. Gina is the mother to your dogs💖💖 Harriet and Jim. Richmond. Va.
so sad about the lake and dead fish/birds. great observations on your part Ken, maybe that sign you saw, should have an additional sign showing a dog, with the slash over it to warn not to let pets go in the lake either ! I hope the farmers are given notice of which chemicals are harmful to the wildlife in the lake, and what they could use on their farm instead. If this happens to the fish/birds, what about the people who eat the cherries ?
Get a Tetra test kit and you will see, if it been hotter than normal maybe not enough oxygen, if you think someone is poisoning them …………………………..buy a gun and sit by the pond.
