This is a Douglas Lucky Larson ,,,today, the best places to retire cheap!
In a different video we talked about retiring right where you are, right now, with some creative house hacking like renting out part of your home or maybe to Airbnb your whole home but part time.
This video is about moving to a cheaper location so your current income simply goes further.
A lot of the information out there about cheap retirement destinations is geared toward this magic number of 1500 dollars per month because US Social Security for one adult is about that amount, maybe a little more with recent cola or cost of living adjustment for 2022. Well, that doesn’t really go very far in most US cities, but, there are many towns and smaller metros in the states and abroad where rent is pretty cheap and food and other essentials won’t break the bank. Of course, that won’t include much lobster for dinner, unless you’re the one catching it.
Most of the info I’ve seen over the years determines the best places OUTSIDE the US, according to acceptance of foreigners, English language compatibility, personal safety, healthcare access and costs, … also… cuisine, obtaining residency or travel visas, and weather,. Of course, overall cost of living is a huge factor… and many of these areas have large retiree and ex-pat communities.
The inexpensive cities and towns WITHIN the US Are often also judged on proximity to stores, travel hubs and services. Often, they ignore the weather component and for many people, including me, a long, cold winter is simply not where I want to retire.
However, Many people I know actually love all four seasons and wouldn’t want to live anywhere that didn’t have at least a little snow each year. On this video, I’m just going to name the towns and cities with a couple comments, and you can do more research from there. Again, just realize that the criteria that puts the cities in the “best places to retire” are focused on cost of living, and the other criteria I mentioned above, but,. One more important factor that you must consider when doing your own research is how free and open some of these communities are, specifically related to certain mandates and lockdowns that we’ve seen over the last two years.
I love spending time in SoCal but LA has very strict measures compared to San Diego. I visited Florida couple times during the pandemic and found it to be very open and free and for me personally, that’s how I like to spend my time, even if there is a little more risk.
Another thing to remember When contemplating a move far from family and friends is that your loved ones may promise to visit, but life often gets in the way and you may need to budget trips to see them. Oh, I know this from experience … I lived on Oahu and Maui for about 10 years total and friends and family rarely came to see me no matter how many beautiful photos I sent and I even had a place for them to stay for free! Simply put, travel to Hawaii, and many other nice places, is expensive and you can’t drive there on a whim. Keep that in mind if you choose to retire cheap in Ecuador. Get used to zoom call chats or make sure to budget some trips back home!
