Why are we moving to Portugal?

We have been in Portugal for six weeks and we have finally, officially decided that we will be applying for our visa to gain residency here. But why did we choose Portugal? In this video, I share our main reasons for making this decision.

Are you considering Portugal? Do you live here already? Let us know down below 🙂

Who are we?

We’re a family of five from the UK (Layla, Russ and our three children); we sold our house and Russ quit his job so that we can pursue our dream to live a simpler, slower, more sustainable life.

Back in 2018, we decided to buy our beautiful Blossom, a Mercedes Vario ex library bus, to turn into our home on wheels. In March 2021, we finally moved in and set off on our adventures, starting in England and Wales, then Ireland and now in Portugal.

  1. Hi, Layla. I've enjoyed a few of your videos, and this one in particular. Yours popped up as suggested watching as i regularly watch several central portugal channels. Very much appreciate your and their living slower (tho clearly busier!) lives closer to your core values amongst a welcoming people and country. I v much like your calm and straight forward commentary/narration, it's as if we're having nice visit with you. Thanks for sharing your journey and very best wishes. Look forward to your finding your place and moving over. Cheering you on from California❣

  2. Second attempt to comment: I think you nailed it with your analysis. Portugal is definitely safe, people are generally peaceful and have noble values and dignity. Please do interact with as much Portuguese people as possible. They (we) love to interact with tourists and foreigners, to hear YOUR story. Portugal and UK have been friends forever, we have the oldest alliance between two countries in the world. Also, I think central Portugal is rapidly becoming a hot spot for Europeans looking for a more quiet and meaningful life. Really good to develop a social network. We are a Portuguese family that live in the UK (for 15 years now) but are now looking to return to Portugal for that lifestyle

  3. Have you seen the Indie Projects YouTube channel? They're a couple from the midlands that moved to portugal about 5 years ago, and are so close to finishing the renovation of their barn, and they have 5 acres of land 😊

  4. Hi, meaby some day we could be neigbours🙂. Me and my wife bought a farm um Lardosa, near Castelo Branco, because we want to have a simpler and sustainable life like you. As soon as possible we will be moving from the busy Algarve to our peace of heaven in Central Portugal.

  5. Hi Layla, myself and my husband moved to Portugal from the UK in August last year and have not looked back. I echo your thoughts on why you are choosing Portugal, the people, weather, scenery, feeling so safe here, it is such a great country to settle. We applied for our D7 visa in May last year ( not the easiest of processes) and we heard 5 weeks later that we had our D7 visa for the 4 months and also the date given for our appointment with SEF in Portugal for the November where we were then given residency for 2 years. Wishing you and your family all the best and hope your dreams come true.

  6. Good choice to apply for your visa and going to live in Portugal. Hope you get approval soon! Do you already have an idea what you do with school for the children?
