After 16 months, Mark and I have decided to leave to Portugal. Living in Portugal will always be part of our journey and we will always be grateful for our time here.

We are so excited about our next chapter and hope you’ll continue to follow along!

  1. Have really enjoyed your videos from Portugal…wishing you and your husband the very best…we are still planning to move to Portugal this coming year…thanks for all you’ve done to help make myself and others interested in the country…

  2. The world is big. You will find your forever place. I am African American, and I lived in Portugal some years back. I agree with you 100%. Portuguese are not very flexible. They are very traditional and not willing to evolve. Portuguese people can be very closed and it's extremely hard to make Portuguese friends.
I hear wonderful things about Thailand. I hear that the people are open and welcoming.
Congratulations to you and your husband on your move!

  3. I was totally expecting this move. I've been following you forever & told my husband that your last video was negative as compared to the others. The last video seemed liked a combo of homesickness & disillusionment had set in. I hope that you guys find the variety that you're seeking. Life is too short to settle. Good luck!!!

  4. Survive -mode ? Did you made a effort to learn the language at all ? Or did you aspect that the Portuguese speak in English all the time with you or even the others ? No not oblige to do that at all . I will be looking forward when you arrive in Thailand in survive -mode. In away very glad that in Portugal their isn't so much ready meals in the supermarkets and junk food outlets over the place people around were they still cook.

  5. Well the food it is a problem then you and the others need to learn to cook different types of food . I'm Portuguese and I don't have a problem with the food I cook different type of foods from different countries learn to cook . The other thing the expats need to learn the language this way you don't need be in survive-mode . Make a effort to learn the language and will be easier much easier to live the daily life . Like many other people they don't make a single effort to integrate or even try to learn the language and many times they fell resentful and with stress and angry for not understanding the day basic language learn the language make a effort and then you can integrate better . I did start live in UK from 1999 until 2018 and despite I did speak English I did made a effort to adapt to the country and their culture and lean more the language this way was easier to understand their culture and live their .

  6. This came as a shock to me. I loved watching your Portugal videos, well it’s you not Portugal. You’re really authentic and this video is no exception. I started researching on Thailand last week, I’ll like to know the pathway you used to reside in Thailand, if that’s information you’d like to share. Thank you so much.

  7. Surprised by your announcement but curious to learn more about your new home city! Will keep watching! If you had an unlimited budget, where would you land? Back to SoCal, or ??? Curious. Planning to visit Portugal, but Lisbon has gotten pricey from what I've seen

  8. Hello my dear Kirsten!! This really comes as No surprise to me, especially after your last video. I'm just bummed that you guys are already gone as I am leaving for Europe next week and plan to end up in Lisbon for a longer stay this time. I was hoping to get together with you and Mark. oh well!! I truly value your deep insights and sincerity in your loves as well as frustrations of life in Portugal. I'm so excited for you choosing Bangkok! I love the Far East and look forward to following you journey. Take care and all the best to you both!!

  9. I understand that you want to leave if the country has not lived up to your expectations, however there are some reasons you mentioned that make me confused:
    5:24 what technology is missing?
7:12 little time out of dictatorship, it's true, but what does that have to do with daily life?

Good luck in your future sojourns around the world.

  10. Hi Kirsten. Sorry to hear you and Mark are leaving Portugal. I’ve enjoyed your videos. I hope you can handle the humidity there. That is what is keeping me from Many Asian and Central American countries. I will keep my sights on Portugal for now. Best of luck.

  11. I'm seeing a lot of other expats leave Portugal! The infrastructure (eg cobbled/ slippery/ narrow roads, flytipping, hills, houses built for the summer not winter etc), bureaucracy, lacking modern processes and conveniences, bland food and lack of opportunities for young people are usually the common reasons. People always present Portugal as a dream but it's important to show the reality. Thanks for sharing your journey. I look forward to seeing what you get up to in Thailand!

  12. Folks are projecting hard in these comments 🥴 If you move to a new city/state/country and decide it's not for you, you can leave! Whether it "makes sense" to anyone else is irrelevant. I'll never understand all the judgment and naysaying.

  13. Ok….Thai food is prob my favorite…..so looking forward to how Thailand compares to Portugal…..also wondering how global the food will be compared to Portugal….I would have thought Lisbon would have more variety than Thailand. We still have not made up our minds of where we will be so for sure would love to see a comparison about food variety, healthcare, beaches, English speakers, modern conveniences etc. We are going to Portugal for 20 days in the spring. Is there any Thai food in Lisbon?

  14. Parabens on the new home in Bangkok! I am staying in Portugal for the time being, and appreciate your honest assessment of what works and doesn't work for you. Best of luck, and keep us posted on your new adventures.

  15. Kirsten,

That's amazing! It's Kendall. As you know we are in Lisbon until Wendsday. What's so Ironic is we still are considering (At this late date) trying to make it to Chiang Mai Thailand for the "Great Lantern festival" on November 8th. Our plan was to spend 5 days in Bangkok, 5 days in Chiang Mai, and 5 days in Phuket.

Anyway I will continue to follow your most interesting and informative viedos. Bet you could have had a "Great bidding Auction for your MARVELOUS apartment in Lisbon. Best Regards and All the Best!

    Kendall & Irene

  16. Hi Kristen, it's a bit surprising that you left Portugal without even exploring more than Lisbon and Porto.
You should have made the most of your last month there, rented a car, drive around, north to south.
Even better, fly to Madeira, Porto Santo, The Açores.

Best of luck to you new adventure in Thailand 🤪

  17. Yes, Bangkok! Great choice. Many people are and will continue to leave Portugal. I left for the same reasons and will be trying out Thailand. Don't get me wrong, Portugal is a great place to visit or take an extended vacation.

  18. Oh my gosh, Kirsten! My heart just sank😯…I am so shocked! You have been the one Youtuber who has been so open and transparent about your life and experiences living in Portugal. I will be there next summer doing a scouting trip because Portugal is where I would like to relocate now that I am retired, and it would have been so nice to connect with you. I have to tell you that I am excited that you have chosen Bangkok! I have traveled to Thailand twice when I was working (Bangkok and Chiang Mai), and besides living in and loving Japan, Thailand is hands down my second favorite country! After 16 months in Bangkok you decide that isn't for you, pack up and move again! Retirement affords you that luxury to move around until you find the place you want to call home. Astrokid, below, made a good point about splitting time throughout the year. That is something that I will even consider. I will continue to follow your videos to remininscence on my time spent in Bangkok. I am looking forward to them! I wish you and your husband all the best on your journey!
