Castelo Branco or Coimbra: where will we prefer to buy land in Central Portugal?

After spending one month in the district of Castelo Branco, we have come to the area south of the city of Coimbra to explore villages/towns such as Figueiro dos Vinhos, Penela, Espinhal, Miranda do Corvo, Lousa and Pedrogao Grande, and the surrounding countryside. The question in our minds is ‘could we buy land and settle here?’.

In this video, I share my thoughts and feelings, comparing the two areas, and at the end I share my current preference. Which will it be?

Who are we?

We’re a family of five from the UK (Layla, Russ and our three children); we sold our house and Russ quit his job so that we can pursue our dream to live a simpler, slower, more sustainable life.

Back in 2018, we decided to buy our beautiful Blossom, a Mercedes Vario ex library bus, to turn into our home on wheels. In March 2021, we finally moved in and set off on our adventures, starting in England and Wales, then Ireland and now in Portugal.

  1. This was invaluable for me, appreciate the generosity with your time in making this video and sharing your opinions. I had come to the same conclusions as looking in similar areas too, but I was doing this only by spending way too much time on the internet, following people and scouring through forums etc, so its helped me seeing the conclusions you came to whilst actually being on the ground there.

  3. I’m gonna be following this so closely! Our budget is the same too. Same ideas, same plans! We as a family would love to meet up with u guys if u get any spare time when we visit for viewings again.

  4. Alentejo next? Can I ask what u plan todo about schooling? We think about this a lot with ours. Honestly we don’t wanna throw ours into the Portuguese system. I’d rather home school but the legalities are complicated.

  5. I like this video (and i liked it 😄) . Some very good points. And things to consider.
The area of Castelo Branco seems to be very nice and peacefull for sure. And also affordable. Was born in a big city myself, have been to many big cities in Europe but don't like them at all. Don't want to live in a big city not even for free.

  6. Consider your own preferences. Do you desire total isolation? Close to the city with amenities for the young ones? Not driving an hour for a cup of coffee? Indeed it is a good idea to check out the place by staying for a while .
