Exploring properties in Leiria, Central Portugal

We decided to stay a bit longer in Leiria to explore the area and its beautiful river beaches, as well as a few properties, including one which really grabbed our attention…

Who are we?

We’re a family of five from the UK (Layla, Russ and our three children); we sold our house and Russ quit his job so that we can pursue our dream to live a simpler, slower, more sustainable life.

Back in 2018, we decided to buy our beautiful Blossom, a Mercedes Vario ex library bus, to turn into our home on wheels. In March 2021, we finally moved in and set off on our adventures, starting in England and Wales, then Ireland and now in Portugal, looking for our patch of land.

  1. I am loving your videos! My husband and I are looking to retire in Portugal in the next several years, and are coming in 6 weeks to start looking at areas and properties. How are you getting exact locations from Idealsta? We can’t seem to get them

  2. Very interesting to see your search.
We did the same about 15 years ago, looked at many areas, but for some reason we were always drawn back to the Algarve, the mountains here always seemed to draw me and welcome me, it felt so like home.
We live now north algarve on the outskirts of sao Bartholomeu de messines, near the alentejo border. It is a beautiful rural area, with moutains barragems and rivers. And not too far from the coast.
I hope you find your special place you will know when you do good luck x

  3. Interesting perspective and we have come to much the same conclusion that Castelo Branco is probably the better area for us. What towns were you exploring near? We have found it difficult to get a clear answer on what type of property is acceptable for the D7 application. Yesterday we were told by a lawyer that a habitation lic would be necessary but some consulates require an urban article. So we are going to try and find out from our consulate what their requirements are. Good luck with the search.

  4. Well I was on I think the ic8 heading from castelo branco to nazare and I saw this big metc camper van , with a grey bearded guy at the wheel with glasses, but no side kick, was that u? I think catelo branco, I met an American couple in Monsanto, they've just bought a final, farm, but having to head back to the states for another 2 year , lovely couple, they told me about market at Monsanto which appears to be expat community. I'm not ready to buy, due to money tied up, but hope to meet and greet one day, luv u , jim

  5. Hi like watching your videos and its good you are taking your time looking at different places, after all it's the home you and your family will live. I for one will keep watching.

  6. I commend your efforts and determination. I was watching an estate agent called Luis who posted a property for 48,000 which had a vineyard and a 1951 property. Please look it up in you tube . Who knows it might interest you. Good luck and I look forward to the updates. Big hug from warm Florida.

  7. Lovely video. Glad to see that you are doing lots of research on, and spending time in, the different areas that you are considering. You will get the perfect property at the right time.

  8. Lovely video again! It's quite an emotional discovery. There are so many beautifull places out there. It's also very difficult to find out what's possible and allowed on those properties. I also have heared that because of fires in 2017 in some areas they changed the rules for building / rebuilding. So in some places you can't get any permissions maybe. Something very important to find out. Greetings!

  9. It's been interesting to see the various areas that you've visited and none of them have made me feel inspired. I also much prefer Castelo Branco, so look forward to seeing what you find there.

  10. We live in France and my biggest tip is follow your heart but also your head. Don't over-extend with both land and renovation. Looking forward to seeing you in your next video. Bon courage 🥰

  11. If there is an urban article for the property, then the town hall (town council) will have a record of it. The estate agent should be able to get a copy of it for you. It could be that it burned down in 2017, but you should be able to rebuild within the same square meters as the original house within the confines of the urban article. From what I understand, the urban article is the “habitation license”. Also check right of way, as in how do you get on to your property. Getting everything checked by a lawyer of course before you proceed with buying. Don’t trust what the estate agent tells you. Also, those prices are hugely inflated. Wishing you and your family the best in finding your dream property.
