My family say I’ve no sense of direction and can get lost in my own house, so, when we go exploring Lisbon the wife takes control. She says a great way to start discovering the capital is at the brand new hi-tech Lisboa Ask Me Centre. The multilingual staff will give you all the information you need, including maps and brochures. You can also buy the brilliant Lisboa Card there. There are also smaller Ask Me kiosks around.
It’s best not to bring a car into the city. The 667 km public transport network is excellent and takes you everywhere you could want to go. And the Lisboa Card gives you free use of the system, as well as free or reduced admission to loads of different attractions.
Of course, locals have different reasons for getting around and there are plenty of other practical ticket schemes you can buy into. All you need to do is visit www.carris.pt to find out everything about the 78 bus lines, five tram lines, and four funiculars — plus details of special night services and disabled access. With the Carris route simulators and timetables on my mobile not even I can get lost any more.
