We love our chickens but they sometimes misbehave (or rather, behave exactly like chickens!). Sesame chicken has had a couple of off-farm excursions recently which means we need to revisit our fencing solution.
I guess we can now answer the question “why did the chicken cross the road?”
Inadequate fencing.
Join us for a one day build that goes fairly smoothly (for the most part), despite some intervention from the weather gods.
You could use an auger (grondboor in Dutch) or did you? Love to watch your progress. I am looking forward to see how the house is going to become.
Hi, I am planning to relocate to Portugal. Do you know if Ourem has a bilingual school?
After pounding in hundreds of posts over the years, I recently discovered a way to injure myself: get over-zealous in the upstroke, get the pounder snagged on the top of the post on the down stroke, and have the top of pounder rotate down and bop me on the head. Fortunately the result was mostly just blood — could have been much worse.
We had chickens for years, lived them we liked to let them free range also . Have you tried to clip their wings, you just clip one then they can't fly cause they will be lopsided.,worked for us .
Have you thought about using solar energised portable/mobile electric fences when you have your meat birds/pigs? I watch lots of homestead type videos and they seem really handy to allow easy movement/adaptable spaces
If you release the post pounder at the downstroke you will save your shoulder from the impact
I think you’ve done well, goal achieved!!
Luxury life for chickens
Check out this compost sifter – it might be useful for your soil sifting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4A4aTvl3yE
I had free range chickens and often one would go for a walk down the road to peck around the hedges. She would always come back.
Great update guys 💯👍 can't wait to see your next video…
That fence doesn't look high enough unless you are clipping the wings?
Please I implore you to not raise pigs for consumption. They are as smart as a dog and if anything rescue them. They are nor healthy for humans to eat and deserve to be treated with respect and dignity as we should be. 🙏
Just a thought, but maybe you could soak the ground right at the location of the post just prior to setting.
The new chicken yard looks great. 👍🏼😁
Hy,what is the camera you use for videos? And microphone? Thanks
I just hope we won't get a video from you in a couple of months, that one of your chickens was killed by a fallen lemon. 🤣 Hope the gals will enjoy the space.
never give a money to chickens , because the chickens came home drunk
chickens cross the road to catch the bus
Instead of pulling out your tape measure every time, make a stick the desired length.
Take it from a Farmer’s daughter, don’t get pigs. They love to root under fences and are always getting out of their pens. We primarily had a dairy, but raised a a couple pigs and sheep for our own use. One pig was sent to his demise earlier than expected as my very busy father was fed up with them escaping their pens, fields, etc. Goats would be great to graze and keep the weeds, brambles, etc. down in your olive grove and elsewhere. Plus, who doesn’t love goats?

Yup, that’s chickens. We have 7 on 900m2 I spent time cleaning up after them and putting up fencing so we could establish plants
The chiken in the meedle of the music was EPIC hahaha.
You may have to clip the chicken’s flight features if you haven’t done it already.
Post hole border – they're brilliant and cheap (either manual tool or as a drill attachment)
Chicken poop is great for anything you want to grow and they eat the bugs and weeds.
Will you hire or get goats for ‘no man’s land’?
If it’s no man’s land is it Kylies corner?
🍻🍻🍻
you can get drill hole borers that work well with a good battery drill.. saves hours ramming posts several sizes on both ebay and amazon.. from experience don't let chicken roam too much, I learned the hard way, found an egg that thought was fresh! i think it had been laid last year, also nettles will grow were chicken go.. they produce high nitrogen poop which nettes love.. looking good guys..
I’m impressed by the perseverance that you two bring to everything you take on. I was curious if Portugal has raptors/ birds-of-prey? And if so, do they target small rodents (and not chickens)?
Great project. It is wonderful that you look after your animals and want them to have a great quality of life. You provide for them and they provide eggs and a little fertilizer here and there around the property. Thanks for sharing.
