Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?

We love our chickens but they sometimes misbehave (or rather, behave exactly like chickens!). Sesame chicken has had a couple of off-farm excursions recently which means we need to revisit our fencing solution.

I guess we can now answer the question “why did the chicken cross the road?”

Inadequate fencing.

Join us for a one day build that goes fairly smoothly (for the most part), despite some intervention from the weather gods.

  1. After pounding in hundreds of posts over the years, I recently discovered a way to injure myself: get over-zealous in the upstroke, get the pounder snagged on the top of the post on the down stroke, and have the top of pounder rotate down and bop me on the head. Fortunately the result was mostly just blood — could have been much worse.

  2. Have you thought about using solar energised portable/mobile electric fences when you have your meat birds/pigs? I watch lots of homestead type videos and they seem really handy to allow easy movement/adaptable spaces

  3. Take it from a Farmer’s daughter, don’t get pigs. They love to root under fences and are always getting out of their pens. We primarily had a dairy, but raised a a couple pigs and sheep for our own use. One pig was sent to his demise earlier than expected as my very busy father was fed up with them escaping their pens, fields, etc. Goats would be great to graze and keep the weeds, brambles, etc. down in your olive grove and elsewhere. Plus, who doesn’t love goats?

  4. Chicken poop is great for anything you want to grow and they eat the bugs and weeds.

Will you hire or get goats for ‘no man’s land’?

If it’s no man’s land is it Kylies corner?

  5. you can get drill hole borers that work well with a good battery drill.. saves hours ramming posts several sizes on both ebay and amazon.. from experience don't let chicken roam too much, I learned the hard way, found an egg that thought was fresh! i think it had been laid last year, also nettles will grow were chicken go.. they produce high nitrogen poop which nettes love.. looking good guys..

  6. I’m impressed by the perseverance that you two bring to everything you take on. I was curious if Portugal has raptors/ birds-of-prey? And if so, do they target small rodents (and not chickens)?

  7. Great project. It is wonderful that you look after your animals and want them to have a great quality of life. You provide for them and they provide eggs and a little fertilizer here and there around the property. Thanks for sharing.
